One of the world's leading toy brands - LEGO. You know it and love it, the plastic construction toy that all construction toys aspire towards. We've got all the range right here! Creator, Duplo, Minifigs, Mindstorms, Minecraft, Technic and more! LEGO Bricks & MoreLEGO is not a cheap hobby, as I’m sure any AFOL – or parent with a LEGO-addicted child – is well aware of! But, there are some ways to get cheaper LEGO sets and parts. So, here’s my list of tips for finding cheap (well, cheaper!) LEGO in the UK. It’s worth bearing in mind that some LEGO themes are cheaper than others. Licensed sets (think Star Wars, superheroes, etc) tend to be pricer per part than LEGO’s own themes, and also tend not to become reduced, at least by much. Sets that LEGO labels as “Exclusive” (think LEGO modulars/other LEGO Creator Expert sets) tend to be harder to track down with discounts. The most obvious place to start here is the LEGO VIP loyalty card. and in LEGO brand stores equivalent to 5% off.

When buying in other stores, becoming a member of their own loyalty schemes can really help make cheaper LEGO, especially if you are buying LEGO on a regular basis! Not something I use, but I know some AFOLs in the UK make use of cashback websites to reduce the cost of their LEGO. The basic idea is you receive a small percentage of the amount you spend through certain websites back, as long as you use the links/tools provided by the cashback sites. Afraid I can’t recommend any, though – you’ll have to follow my advice in #5 below and talk to other AFOLs. This is something that I am really, really poor at as a LEGO fan: if you wait until long after sets are initially released, there’s a good chance that you’ll get them cheaper than their RRP in a lot of cases. Being a total LEGO addict and “needing” new sets as soon as they come out, I probably lose out quite heavily here at times! Patience doesn’t just apply to new LEGO sets, though – if there are particular sets you want, keep an eye on eBay and you can pick up the occassional bargain.

Just beware that bulk “LEGO” bricks sold on eBay are often not 100% LEGO despite any claims they are. There may well be a mix of Megablocks and other non-LEGO parts mixed in for good measure. One way I find out about new LEGO offers is because I talk to other AFOLs (Adult Fans of LEGO) on a regular basis at LEGO User Group Meetings (I’m a member of a few but my “main” group is Brick Alley LUG in Darlington). I’m a member of the “AFOLs of Facebook” group, which although has a worldwide membership does have a good number of UK LEGO fans who will post any decent offers they find online. Twitter is also a place to find hints of cheap LEGO sets and parts – I tweet as @TheBricksMcGee, so you can learn of offers as I do if you follow me there.I have a unhealthy fascination with Chinese LEGO knock-offs, and we've published several articles, like this one, about the rubbish that's available in markets across the far east in the past. I think it's because I find it incredible that the stuff, which violates so many intellectual properties, is being made at all.

Brickset member woodywood currently resides in Shanghai so sees a lot of the junk first-hand. He's kindly sent me some minifig packs so I can see how bad they are for myself. Warning: this article contains disturbing images and strong language. First under inspection is JLB's (Jai Li Bo toys) Anna from Frozen. The box certainly looks attractive, and very LEGO-like. The contents, the figure and cards, are well packaged in heat-sealed bags. Unfortunately, that's all I have good to say about it. Once you open the packet it's immediately apparent what rubbish this is. Now, when I watched Frozen I'm sure Anna was a fair-skinned girl with what the Disney wiki calls 'long strawberry-blonde hair' in ponytails and a long-flowing blue dress and red cape. I must assume that a different version was shown in China because this figure has a blue crop-top and an impressive tan... :-) As you can see the figure needs to be assembled from the cheap plastic parts, some of which are still on their sprue.

The joints are loose and it's difficult to get the hair to stay on. A flower is thrown in for good measure. The best part of it is the trading cards... Next under the microscope is Star Wars Han Solo by Bom Bom. Again, the box, a good rip-off of a real LEGO one, and the packaging is not bad, but it soon becomes apparent that the photo on the front is that of the LEGO version of the figure, not the one in the box. The arms and hands are not pre-assembled and if I had to guess I'd say the plastic used is polystyrene rather than ABS. The parts are very badly moulded and have sprue marks in prominent places. The hair fits better than on Anna, but once on it's impossible to get it off!. It bears a passing resemblance to the image on the box, but the printing is absolutely shockingly bad. Once again, the best part of the set are the cards, which have the appearance that they are part of some sort of game but the numbers and information is all rubbish. Collectors will want the whole set of them, I'm sure...
