Daniel Gaspard, 45, allegedly stole merchandise from a Walmart in Eunice, La., on Saturday, before attempting to flee on one of the store's electric wheelchair shopping carts. A Louisiana man who stole $73 worth of goods from Walmart was detained after he stupidly tried to flee on one of the store's slow-moving electric wheelchair shopping carts, police said. Daniel Gaspard allegedly stole vodka, an Adidas sun visor, a TV antenna and "Mardi Gras cups" from the outlet in Eunice on Saturday afternoon, according to KATC. He loaded the goods into the front basket of the cart, which had a "Property of Walmart" sign attached, before brazenly driving past the checkout lanes and out of the building. The 45-year-old then tried to make his great escape on the vehicle, which can only hit a top speed of a few miles per hour. But he was spotted by a staffer who was heading to the store. He told the manager about the cart theft and cops were called. Walmart's electric wheelchair shopping carts can only travel at a few miles per hour and aren't the best choice for getaways.

Eunice Police Department immediately tracked the suspect, and the cart with the merchandise inside, down at a nearby truck stop, reports The Smoking Gun. Gaspard was arrested and charged with felony theft for allegedly stealing the merchandise and the cart, and for trespassing. He remains in jail in lieu of $4,000 bail.
