One of the most important factors in achieving a better nights sleep is comfort. With this in mind it is important to consider the amount of actual sleep space you will have available on your new mattress. In general, the mattress should be longer and wider than the amount of space you or you and your sleeping partner take up when laying on it. For two adults it is recommended to sleep on a queen or king mattress size. The following illustrations are a general guide to help you make the best decision. Twin Mattress Size 39''x 75'' (inches) Twin bed size is generally made to accommodate one child or one adult sleeper. On occasion when you need to lay with your child it should accommodate, but will be a bit crowded. If you are a taller adult you may want to consider a twin-XL which will give you added length. Twin (also referred to a ‘single’) is great for smaller guest spaces, bunkbeds, and daybeds. Twin XL Mattress Size 39''x 80'' (inches) Twin XL bed size (Extra-Long) is 5 inches in length longer than the standard twin.

This size is great for taller youth or adults. Twin-XL is the same length as a queen or king, In fact two of them side by side equals a king. Full Mattress Size 54''x 75'' (inches) Full bed size, also known as a ‘double/standard’, was commonly used for two adults 30 - 40 years ago when the homes and bedrooms were built much smaller. Now it is usually purchased for single person use and sometimes smaller guest rooms. It is a tight fit for two adults and the same length as a twin. Two adults sleeping on a full size is equivalent to each person sleeping on a crib mattress (27 inches of sleep space). Most people with a sleeping partner opt for the queen size. Full can sometimes be special ordered in extra long. Queen Mattress Size 60''x 80'' (inches) Queen bed size is the most popular size sold. Great for two adults that want to save living space in their master bedroom and great for single use for those who just like to stretch out. King Mattress Size 76''x 80'' (inches)

King bed size (also known as an eastern king) is the same length as a queen but much wider (16 inches). If you have the space it offers the most room for couples. King size beds are also great if you have kids or pets who like to share your bed. California King Mattress Size - For very tall people you can also special order a California King which is a 72'' x 84''.  It gives you an extra 4" compared to a queen or king size. It’s a given that you want fabulous looking, comfortable bedding for your dorm.  After all, you’ll be spending a tremendous amount of time in your dorm room each day. Before you head out to decorate your new room, make sure you consult this Dorm Bedding FAQ as you prepare your college dorm checklist. How do I know the right size bedding for college dorms? Your college or boarding school will be able to let you know the size of your dorm mattress, whether twin or twin XL, also called "extra long twin".

Some colleges will even have double or full beds, so it is worthwhile to check. Sometimes this information is online, or is mailed in the housing packets, but if not available, just call the college housing office and ask. You’ll need to know what dorm building you’ll be living in, because many colleges have a mix of the different bed sizes. A regular twin is exactly what you’d find in a home:  39”x75”. A twin XL mattress, also called twin extra long, is anywhere from 36” to 39” wide and 80” long (some a few inches longer). The full or double bed is 54”x75”. It's important to buy the right sized sheets. A twin fitted sheet will not fit a twin XL mattress, so don’t bring your twin sheets from home. That is because the twin XL fitted sheet is a full five inches longer than the regular twin you may use at home. Because the extra long beds require specially sized sheets and comforters, these often sell out quickly at large retailers. Make your move-in day a seamless one, and order online through American Made Dorm®.

You don’t want to spend the day searching the local stores for what you need! What is the depth of a dorm mattress? Dorm mattresses are a standard 7” to 8” deep. They aren’t terribly comfortable! You will definitely want a mattress topper or memory foam topper on your college dorm checklist. This will make your dorm bed noticeably more comfortable and will ensure a good night’s sleep. Remember, you’ll be spending nine months sleeping in your dorm, so the extra expense of a foam topper is well worth the investment. Our dorm bedding bundles include a foam topper. The depth of your topper will also impact the depth of the sheets you buy. Beware of inexpensive or imported sheets. They often have an 8 inch or 9 inch fitted sheet pocket, which won’t be enough to stay put when sleeping. There’s nothing worse than waking up to sheets that have pulled apart from the mattress. The bottom line:  if you use a 2 inch or more memory foam or other topper, you’ll need extra depth in your sheets.

Recommended size for bedding for college dorms: 12 inch deep pockets for fitted sheets. Our sheets are deep with elastic all the way around the bed. We guarantee they'll hug the mattress. No feet sticking to the plastic mattress during the night! What kind of comforter will I want? A high quality college comforter is a key item for your college dorm checklist (or boarding school checklist). First, make sure you select something that is made to last. Some polyester materials (especially imported) "pill" (ball up) after washing. Inexpensive, imported comforters found at big box retailers or other online residence hall providers often don’t hold up past the first semester, and have low density fill which “shifts” and leaves bare spots after washing. Often, you'll find the polyester fill doesn't extend to the four corners, because the manufacturer skimped on proper fill. Spend what you can on a comforter that will last all four years. Remember, you spend 8 to 12 hours every night in your bed.

You want it to be comfortable! If you are attending college in the north where it is cold at night, keep in mind you will want a comforter with extra loft, or fill. That is an important consideration in shopping for your dorm bedding. Buying a 100% cotton comforter ensures comfort, softness, warmth on cold nights, and durability. Cotton is washable in cold water. 100% cotton comforters custom made in the USA by American Made Dorm® are made to last! We offer twin, twin XL, double/full, and even queen and king in a wide variety of fabulous prints and bold, bright colors, as well as neutrals, geometrics, stripes and solids. All have coordinating shams, accent pillows, and euro shams. My comforter comes with a sham. What is the difference between a pillow sham and a pillowcase? A pillowcase is a piece of bedding made of sheeting material, open on one end, into which a pillow is inserted. A pillow sham, on the other hand, normally has a slit in the back where a pillow is inserted.
