Starting the first week of June, museum visitors will be able to come play in a variety of exhibits within the garden. The Land of Sand contains a construction area filled with tractors and shovels for digging in the sand. There is also a new attraction that features tires of different sizes buried in the sand for climbing and hiding. The Tea House contains mushroom chairs and a mushroom table specially sized for children. There are multicolored wood pictures and benches on the walls surrounding the mushroom furniture. The Tea House is located right next to the Turtle pond, which is a beautiful, little pond where the Discovery Museum turtles can be found swimming during the day.

The Turtle Pond also has a bird house, bird bath and miniature statues to compliment the pond. The Adventure Garden also has the Subaru Edible Garden, which will grow different types of fruits and vegetables during the warm weather. Right next to the Edible Garden is a picnic area with tables and chairs for museum guests to enjoy lunch in the sunshine. Guests can bring their own lunch or purchase something from our own J-Dogs Cafe! Finally, there is the Subaru Butterfly Garden that grows plants and flowers that will attract caterpillars and butterflies throughout the summer. Come into the Discovery Museum starting Saturday, June 1st to experience all the fun exhibits the Adventure Garden has to offer!Mushroom by Eero Aarnio 1960 The Mushroom is one of the oldest designs of Eero Aarnio. The first version was made of rattan and was a good running product in the early sixties. Aarnio: "My first commercial design idea was a cane stool which I wove myself in 1954.

In 1960 I expanded it into a whole family of products and found a manufacturer in Hong Kong. The first fibreglass samples of these stools were produced in the 70's, and the actual production did not start until in the end of the 90's. The name of the cane stool was MUSHROOM in the US market, and because the fibreglass version is the same product, as far as shape, dimensions and function are concerned, they were given the same name." The Mushroom is a nice completion to the famous fibreglass designs like Pastil and Ball Chair. Use it as a stool or a small table. Combine it with your Tomato Chair or place it in your bathroom. It is always typical for high quality design that you can use it everywhere and in combination with nearly everything. There is no doubt that the MUSHROOM found its place in the family of famous Aarnio fibreglass designs. On Wednesday at a California trade show, Ecovative Design unveiled its initial products, including a $280 stool, composed of mushroom-based material that it calls a "healthy and sustainable" alternative to chemically treated particle board. "Ecovative grows every component of the Imperial stool: the legs, seat, upholstery, cushioning, and the packaging it is protected with," said Ecovative co-founder and CEO Eben Bayer. "

We envision a future where everything for the home — and office — is grown. From the exterior walls, to the insulation, the floors, walls, wall tiles, cabinets, chairs, tables; all of the components traditionally constructed with standard engineered wood containing formaldehyde and other toxic resins, can now be cultivated in our facilities using sustainable, grown products." The company launched its new furniture line, which also includes a bar stool, a desk organizer and a key holder, at the GreenBuild International Conference, which runs Wednesday through Friday in Los Angeles. Bayer also previewed the stool Wednesday at the SynBioBeta Conference in San Francisco. "Building on our core idea that the mycelium of a mushroom can work as 'nature's glue' to bind agriculture waste and wood together, Ecovative's architects, mycologists, engineers, artists, designers, and others on our team worked together to create these products for a new generation," said company co-founder and Chief Scientist Gavin McIntyre.

"Ecovative designing, developing, and selling biofabricated furniture is a significant milestone. The next step in realizing the full potential of this new mushroom-based technology requires rethinking and converting existing particle board mills. That is why we are partnering with mills across North America and Europe to test and pilot our mResin(tm) adhesive system," McIntyre said. He said the company purchased a press about a year ago to make the new mushroom-based panels. During that period, it added about 16 more production jobs, bringing its combined staff between offices in Green Island and Troy to about 86 workers, McIntyre said. The furniture products will be sold directly online, and are not available in any retail stores. The mushroom furniture effort comes after new federal safety rules in July aimed at reducing public exposure to toxic formaldehyde emissions from engineered wood. The Environmental Protection Agency rule specifically cited Ecovative's process as an alternative to traditional manufacturing of particleboard and composite wood products.
