As is the case now, Noddy Holder & Jimmy Lea most Christmas releases have to be planned months in advance, and Slade's schedule in 1973 was no exception. During Slade's summer tour of the East Coast of the USA, the band stopped off in New York and booked some studio time at the Record Plant, the legendary recording studio where Jimi Hendrix, The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac had laid down tracks. Noddy Holder explains below: - "It was a steaming hot day. To get the sound we wanted we did some recording from the corridor and we were singing 'Merry Xmas Everybody' in the middle of a sweltering summer.

The Americans hanging about were staring at us and thinking 'Mad Englishmen...it must have seemed pretty stupid to them". Jimmy Lea remembers being in awe of recording the song at such a famous studio. "John Lennon was doing his 'Mind Games' album there at the same time, so I was using the same piano that Lennon was...it was an odd feeling". Just to prove that the inspiration for a good song can come at any time, Jimmy can thank his daily ablutions for his most fondly-remembered song. The tune for 'Merry Xmas Everybody' came to me in a shower in Memphis" he states. "I wrote the verse and put it to an old song of Noddy's called 'Buy Me A Rocking Chair' that he wrote in 1967". In December of that year, the song became the third Slade single to go straight in at number one in the UK chart, with an advanced order of well over 300,000, and has gone on to become their biggest seller with sales topping a million, and that's just the UK market.Listen to Noddy Holder on Merry Christmas Everybody

The band and their record company, Polydor, decided to produce a Christmas hit. For inspiration Slade members Noddy Holder and Jim Lea looked at previous material they had written. Lea recalled a melody and verse he came up with while showering, and Holder recalled a song he had discarded in 1967, which he had written when the band were named the N'Betweeners. It was entitled “Buy Me a Rocking Chair”, and was Holder’s first solo work. Holder used the melody of this song for the chorus, and Lea’s melody became the verse. After an evening out drinking, Holder worked through the night at his mother’s house in Walsall to write the lyrics, which he completed in one draft. In a 2007 interview with the Daily Mail, he spoke about the song’s creation: “We’d decided to write a Christmas song and I wanted to make it reflect a British family Christmas. Economically, the country was up the creek. The miners had been on strike, along with the grave-diggers, the bakers and almost everybody else.

I think people wanted something to cheer them up – and so did I. That’s why I came up with the line ‘Look to the future now, it’s only just begun’. Once I got the line, ‘Does your Granny always tell you that the old ones are the best’, I knew I’d got a right cracker on my hands.” Santa Claus is Coming To Town Mama Weer All Crazee Now Let The Good Times Roll / Feel So Fine Coz I Luv You We're Really Gonna Raise The Roof Skweeze Me, Pleeze Me Let's Have A Party Hey Ho, Wish You Well My Oh My (Swing Version) Do You Believe In MiraclesYou Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere Get your mind off wintertime You ain’t goin’ nowhere My bride’s gonna come Oh, oh, are we gonna fly Down in the easy chair!
