The service allows resident to request one three cubic metre skip bin (or lounge suite), one white good and one mattress collection per financial year. For details of the new bulk waste service refer to the Frequently Asked Questions below. If you have any further questions please phone the City on 9400 4255 or email. In response to community feedback and the significant rise in waste disposal costs, the City of Joondalup has introduced a new contemporary on-request hard waste service to replace the old verge pick-up service. The bulk verge green waste service remains the same. The changes were also prompted by a 2014 Waste Service Review that found the City collects more bulk waste per household than any other local Government in Australia, and double the WA average. Discarded Fridges and Air Conditioning Units must be degassed prior to recycling. This City collects discarded fridges and air conditioning units for recycling as part of the Bulk Hard Waste White Good Service. Each unit collected is responsibly de gassed before final disposal or recycling.

In the interest of safety the City encourages residents to report any person seen to be tampering with the fridges or air conditioning units that are on verges awaiting collection. For further information on the federal legislation regarding the recycling of fridges and air conditioning units please view The Ozone Protection and Synthetic greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989. For further information contact the City on 9400 4255. For further information relating to the new service please view the frequently asked questions. Why do we have a bulk waste service? When did the new service start? How do I book a service? To book any of the three bulk hard waste collection services please call:  Bulk hard waste service details? How long will I have the skip bin for? What size will the skip be? Today my bin was delivered and it still had waste in, why? How do I know how much waste can be placed in my skip? What can I do with items that are too good to dispose of? One of the aspirations behind introducing this new contemporary service is to try to keep items suitable for resale or reuse in circulation while they still have some “life left in them”, or could be of use to someone else.

If you think your item(s) may be of use to someone else consider: • Selling or advertising your item on local websites such as Gumtree, eBay or Facebook selling/for free pages • Contacting local charitable organisations such as the City’s partners; Anglicare - 6253 3535 Salvos - 137 258 Vinnies - 9444 5622 Please note that these organisations will need to discuss your item(s) with you to determine its suitability. • Taking your item(s) to Tamala Park or Balcatta Recycling Centres for donation to their reuse shop • Taking part in the Garage Sale Trail on Saturday 21 October 2017. This is Australia’s biggest national re-use event visit Garage Sale Trail website • Taking part in the City’s bi-annual e-waste and charity clothing drop off events. If these items are no longer of any use, they can be broken down so that they can fit into the container. On collection, these broken items will be taken to a reprocessing facility where materials such as wood, metals and textiles are recovered for recycling.

What about lounge suites which will not fit in the skip? I cannot lift my items by myself into the skip. What should I do? My large mattress is too difficult for me to get to the verge. My large fridge/freezer is too difficult for me to get to the verge. What should I do? What happens if my property doesn’t have a verge? If you live in a unit or property without a verge you will still have access to the Bulk Hard Waste Collection Service. The collection contractor will visit your address and decide the best location for the skip. You may need to sign a consent form to agree to place the skip in a suitable location. Where will the items go for processing? Skip Waste Mattresses White Goods Can I save my skip bin, mattress and white good service quotas for the next year? Can I order more than one skip/mattress/white good service? Will I still have green waste vouchers? Yes, four green waste vouchers were issued with the annual rates notice. The bulk green waste collection service remains as a scheduled service, view your area details or call 9400 4255.

Additionally smaller organic waste such as grass cuttings, bush trimmings, leaves, etc, can  be placed in your domestic green lid bin, as the content of this bin is delivered to a compost processing plant in Neerabup, where the organics are converted into compost.  What will I do with e-waste? What do I do with paint and other hazardous household waste? The Bulk Collection Service has never included paint removal or other hazardous items.  The City holds sporadic Hazardous Household Waste temporary drop-off days in alignment with funding opportunities and support from the Waste Authority and WALGA.
