Chiang Mai is somewhat famous for its furniture and household decorative items, be it old antiques dating back to the Lanna period or newer, handmade products made from various types of woods, metals and ceramics.

Of course, it’s normally the smaller items that prove more popular with tourists who only have limited space in their luggage, although it is possible to buy larger and heavier items such as statues, sculptures, artwork, cabinets, and table furniture and have it all shipped home – at a cost. We’ve scoured the city and surrounding countryside and found you these five top furniture shops in Chiang Mai. Full-Day Excursion to Chiang Rai & Golden Triangle This large wholesale store is set a little way outside of Chiang Mai city centre, but it is well worth the drive for its extensive range of furniture, ceramics, sculptures and antiques. In terms of furniture, they stock elaborately handcrafted wooden chairs and tables (these are really heavy), as well as some more modern (and lighter) garden furniture, cabinets and desks. For those travelling light, Baan Tawai stocks an exceptionally cheap range of locally-made ceramics (things like bowls and mugs), as well as textile clothing, rugs, bags and accessories. Look out also for the ultra-sleek ‘Panna Collection’ of dining furniture, where traditional teak wood meets modern Ikea-esque design. For a better idea of what they stock, visit the website (link provided below). Address: 90 Moo 2 ban-Tawai Khun Khong, Hangdong, Chiang Mai Tel: +66 (0) 81 882 4882 Located on Chiang Mai’s picturesque Riverside, T Tara is not only easy to find but also stocks a decent range of locally-made furniture, artwork and handicrafts.

They also boast some superb antiques, carvings and Buddhist statues imported from nearby Myanmar. Whatever your budget, T Tara is a great place visit as they have everything from 100-baht pendants and keyrings, to US$4,000 Buddha head sculptures (plus the shipping costs…). Other items from our last visit included a pair of wood carved deer that sold as a set and some knee-high resin statues of dancing tribeswomen. Find the medium-sized store on Charoenprathet Road, one block down from the famous Iron Bridge and not too far away from the Night Bazaar. Opening Hours: 09:00 – 19:00 Address: 78/1 Charoenprathet Road, one block away from the Iron Bridge, on the way to Night Bazaar Tel: +66 (0) 5381 8191 As a rule of thumb, the larger the furniture or wholesale store is, the further you have to go from Chiang Mai city centre to find it. Chiangmai Sudaluck is no exception, and you will need your own set of wheels (or hire a songtheaw) for the trip into the countryside east of the city.

The place has a great collection of locally-produced furniture (perhaps second only to the more popular Baan Tawai). Hefty wood carvings – be it artwork, garden benches, chests of draws or dinner tables – are a speciality here, and most are made from locally sourced teak wood from the surrounding forests. Check out their site (link below) to see all their teak furniture categorised into living room, cabinets, office items, bedroom, outdoor and carvings. Address: 99/9 Chiangmai-Sankampaeng Road, Chiang Mai Tel: +66 (0) 5333 8006-11 For a slightly more modern collection of furniture, Gerald Collection on the hip and happening Niman Road offers and small but high-quality range of sofas, beds, tables, chair sets, cabinets and draws made from a variety of different kinds of wood. As well as larger items, those travelling light might be interested in some of the lighting fixtures, ornaments or fold-away furnishings. There are two showrooms now on Niman, or if the choice here is not enough, head out to their factory store (where you can get a tour and see the furniture being made) out on Maejo New Road in Nongjom.

Opening Hours: 10:00 - 17:00 Address: 6/23-24 Nimmanhaemin Road, Suthep, Muang District Tel: +66 (0) 5322 0604 If you’re not interested in locally-made stuff or traditional teak furnishings, but care more about modern design on the cheap, the huge Index Living Mall could be the answer. The stuff here is certainly not authentic Chiang Mai, but what you are guaranteed is a huge range of furniture for cheap prices, including beds, garden furniture, table sets, plumbing, lighting, kitchen wares, office furniture and everything in between. What’s more, it’s impossible to miss, located right on the superhighway that runs around the city, next to Big C and not too far from the new Central Festival Shopping Mall. Do note that you don’t have especially travel to Chiang Mai to explore Index Living Mall; there are also branches located in Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, Hua Hin, Udon Thai and about a dozen other places throughout Thailand. Opening Hours: Mon - Fri 11:00 - 20:00;
