The husband and wife, based in London, phoned to say that they had just purchased a house on 150 acres in Litchfield County, Connecticut. It was not to be a vacation home, as one might expect, but rather their primary residence—an epic move for the couple, considering how accustomed they and their young children were to city living. "I wanted to hear the sound of running water and feel the earth beneath my feet," says the husband, who, after overseeing several successful businesses, was craving a more tranquil life.Quieter, yes, but still cosmopolitan. The clients, serious art collectors, trusted Mahdavi to balance dual objectives: provide the children with a comfortable home and channel the couple’s urbane tastes.
"Decorating is like portraiture," Mahdavi explains of her assignment. "They wanted to keep the level of sophistication you find in the city but bring it to the country. I had never faced that challenge before."The 16,000-square-foot, six-bedroom dwelling comprises an old barn and several additions. At the time the clients bought the place, however, the extensions felt a little tacked on, and the layout didn’t flow well for daily family life. "It was super important to make it seem like one house," Mahdavi notes. To give the structure a more cohesive feel, she altered rooflines, aligned doorways and windows, and linked two separate second-story wings with a new hallway. Rustic timber beams were whitewashed, while bare walls and ceilings were given depth with wood paneling. "I tried to erase details in the farmhouse and add some to the modern spaces so they would all blend," the designer says.Mahdavi’s talent for achieving harmony among bold, statement-making elements is evident throughout the residence.
In the airy main kitchen, one of the family’s favorite gathering spots, graphic lacquer cabinets riff on decorative concrete blocks from the 1960s. "They have a happy quality," the designer says of the built-ins. So, for that matter, do the kitchen table—her own creation, with a yellow ceramic base that pokes provocatively through the oak top—and the free-form Campana Brothers rattan light suspended above the marble island. The fixture, the wife jokes, is "India’s idea of country."The living room is a high-ceilinged space that feels casually serene during the day but unabashedly glamorous at night. "With a grand room like this you need to start with a few strong pieces and work around them," says Mahdavi, pointing to twin lemon-hued semicircular sofas that anchor one side of the space. She mixed these and other pieces of her own design with furniture by such 20th-century masters as Jean Royère and André Arbus. Opposite the fireplace is a particularly eye-catching vignette featuring a dynamically shaped Ellsworth Kelly wall sculpture, a crisp, angular Osvaldo Borsani chaise longue, and a softly sculptural Andrea Branzi floor lamp.
The mood in the adjacent library is cozier, with richly finished woodwork, floor-to-ceiling bookcases, and a leitmotif of animal prints. "Houses have rhythms that need to be broken," Mahdavi says. "The whole place is bright and open to the outdoors. I made the library darker so you feel completely embraced."Inspired by an Ellsworth Kelly totem that the previous owners had installed near a pond on the property, the husband envisioned the grounds as an art park. He acquired a monumental Richard Serra work, consisting of nine horizontal steel slabs, each delivered on a separate flatbed truck and personally sited by the artist in a meadow. Elsewhere on the expansive estate are a whimsical tree house by Roderick Romero and one of Richard Long’s signature interventions, a circle of overlapping red-slate flagstones in a clearing. Walking trails now weave through the woodland terrain, and the Cambridge, Massachusetts–based landscape firm Reed Hilderbrand added gardens, terraces, a tennis court, and a soccer field.
"We’re in the middle of nowhere, so we need to be able to entertain ourselves," the husband says.The home’s recreational outbuildings are as rigorously designed as the main residence. Mahdavi whitewashed the poolhouse interior and furnished it with unexpected pieces of furniture and art—among them a scrap-wood dining table and benches by Piet Hein Eek, and a set of vibrant windowlike works by Ugo Rondinone that lends a bit of fun-house atmosphere. "It feels totally beachy, totally American," Mahdavi observes.And then there’s the games barn, which is outfitted with Ping-Pong, billiard, and Foosball tables and showcases a wall-size Sol LeWitt line drawing. For the designer this high-low mix perfectly sums up the owners’ distinctive country existence. "They have the sophistication of their London life and a playfulness that’s essential for family," Mahdavi says.
