Pieces Included: 1 Table and 2 Stools Total Seating Capacity: 2Most LEGO fans are constantly looking for furniture that can be functional and also store all or part of their LEGO collection. The folks at Brick Innovations were in the same position and decided to do something about it - so they started designing their own LEGO furniture.

And so the Brick Build, Organize and Storage Solution (BOSS) Table was born. Brick Innovations is starting their Kickstarter campaign today. In support of that launch, they sent Brickset one of their prototype Brick BOSS Tables for us to try out for a few weeks. The table comes in a relatively compact package but at a pretty hefty weight - 67 pounds! All the materials are well packed and cushioned. Instructions are included in the box, and there's also an instruction video online. Both the instructions and the video mention using power drills to assemble the Brick BOSS, but I was able to put the table together using only flat head and Phillips screwdrivers. All of the pieces are connected with cams and dowels, making assembly straightforward and quite solid. The instructions are clear, though I found the video to be the most help. I assembled the table while watching the Olympics and taking time between steps; it took me about an hour to assemble. Of course, I had a supervisor "helping".

If you had no distractions and no furry supervision I'm sure the table could be constructed in a much shorter period of time. I'll note that the instructions have bracing that is supposed to be used to secure the table to the wall behind it. I didn't do this, so that would add a little extra time. Once assembled, the table is solid and looks quite attractive. The final dimensions are about two feet high, 18 inches deep and just about three feet wide. The depth and width allow for a relatively expansive building space. The table is flanked on three sides with raised edges which will prevent wayward bricks from falling off the sides or back of the table. The table contains four relatively deep drawers that are intended for LEGO storage. Included with the table are eight dividers along with brackets that can be placed anywhere you choose - or not at all. I chose to have the top drawer without any dividers at all, and used the other dividers across the other drawers. The feature that makes the table easily identifiable for LEGO are the knobs.

They have raised LEGO type studs that are intended to be compatible with LEGO. The prototype knobs that I had were 3D printed so didn't really allow a minifig to stick. The production knobs will be injection moulded so should hold a minifig much better. The drawer mechanisms are quite smooth, though I found (due to mostly operator error) that you need to pull on both of the knobs when pulling out a drawer to ensure the smoothest movement. Pulling on one knob will work most of the time, but can lead to the drawer getting a little stuck by coming out a little sideways. This is easily remedied by pushing the drawer back in and pulling gently on both knobs. I want to point out a couple features that aren't evident in the pictures. First, the back legs of the able have some cutouts at the bottom to allow for baseboards. That lets you place the Brick BOSS flush against the wall. Second, the securing system to the wall is a great safety touch (even though I didn't install it) - the purpose of it is to prevent the Brick BOSS from tipping forward if all four drawers are pulled out and loaded full of LEGO.

I imagine this is a quite common situation when you have kids working on their LEGO creations. I liked having the four drawers - I used this extensively for most of my recent builds. I tended to use the top drawer without any dividers at all, finding it easy to dump parts of my current build there. That way I could step away from the build in the middle and close the drawer; not having to worry about any parts falling off the table before getting back to it. The other three drawers I find useful for the intended purpose - storage. I'm one of those AFOLs who tends to store complete sets together. Regardless, I still have some loose bricks and now I have something to keep them in one place. Additionally, it's the perfect height for me to display models to prep them for photography for reviews! The target demographic users for the Brick BOSS table are kids - and I would say that the dimensions are perfect for them. As an adult building I found myself either on a kids chair or more often kneeling in front of the table to use it.

The height should be ideal for kids. The materials of the Brick BOSS table are high quality and the final result is quite sturdy. Having the table secured to the wall behind would help ensure that it will stay in place. I really like the raised edges on three sides at the top to minimize stray LEGO bricks falling off. If I had a suggestion for improvement, it would be to have the table be a table - by that I mean to have someplace where you can sit on a chair at the table and have your knees underneath the surface. As it was, if I sat in a chair in front of the table I felt as though I had my knees under my chin while trying to build - not the most comfortable position. Kids who tried this also felt the same way (though without the knees under the chin). Their knees bumped up against the drawers so often they ended up standing in front of the table instead of sitting in a chair. Brick Innovations received this feedback independent of Brickset from other users. By the time we finished this review, they have also come out with the Brick BOSS Table Executive version that adds wings on each side of the table to allow for kids to sit at the table while they build.
