The critical darling is on pace for an opening weekend close to $28.8 million if it follows a similar pattern to the former of those two films. The thriller still stands at 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with an astounding 132 critical reviews counted, while Flixster users have given it a strong 86 percent score (among 15,166 votes) through one day of play (slightly ahead of Split‘s 83 percent with 15,039 votes counted at the same point).

Meanwhile, The LEGO Batman Movie added $4.275 million yesterday, down just 42 percent from last Friday and now standing at $118.3 million domestically. It’s targeting close to $18.4 million in its third weekend with an easy runner-up finish. Among the other new releases, Rock Dog bowed to $901,000 yesterday while Collide misfired with just $539,072. Their respective opening weekends look to net around $3.9 million and $1.5 million. Our key weekend projections based on the studios’ Friday estimates are below. Updated estimates will be posted tomorrow. Note: Sony had not reported Friday grosses at the time of this story’s publishing. Their estimates will be included on Sunday. Friday Morning: Sources report that Jordan Peele’s Get Out took in an estimated $1.8 million from Thursday night’s opening shows beginning at 7pm in 2,240 theaters domestically. That’s another excellent start for the latest project under the Blumhouse banner, coming in just shy of Split‘s $2.0 million last month.

It more closely matches the $1.88 million of Don’t Breathe last August, as well as the identical $1.8 million of 10 Cloverfield Lane last March, while handily topping the $1.02 million of The Visit in September 2015. Several scenarios are now in play for Get Out over the weekend, but while Universal had been projecting a high-teens opening, it should easily exceed that. ’s final forecast of $27 million on Wednesday remains close to our expectation at this stage, although there is potential to go even higher. The film is sitting at an incredible 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes with 117 reviews counted as of this article’s publishing — a rare feat for any kind of movie, especially one from the thriller/horror genre. Word of mouth will no doubt keep building at this point, with the only potential minor hiccup coming on Sunday when the Oscar telecast could soften late matinee and evening earnings for most films. Rock Dog and Collide are also opening this weekend, although no Thursday grosses have been reported at this time for the latter (the former reportedly held no screenings last night).

The LEGO Batman Movie is expected to easily come in second place this weekend, though, as it continues to leg out its run through strong audience reception. For a second year, the Central gymnasium served as a symbolic coliseum on Saturday the 4th, when hundreds of eighth grade gladiators, cheered on by friends, families, and team mates, fought it out for the FIRST Lego Robotics Qualifying Tournament competition, hosted by Central Catholic’s Robotics Club. According to Mr. Horwath, the Robotics Club moderator, the event this year is a larger turnout of competitors than last year’s event.

Assisting with all the logistics and judging for the competition were numerous Central students and faculty members as well.  “It was very exciting to see all the students exhibiting the spirit of friendly competition, showing gracious professionalism and “coopertition” – (a combination of the words cooperation and competition), the Core values of FIRST LEGO league. There are some awesome scientific minds being prepared for our future,” said Mrs. Martinez, CCHS Librarian and volunteer extraordinaire. The FIRST LEGO League Qualifying Tournament hosted 24 teams from the West Division of the Alamo Region. Teams competed for advancement to the Alamo West Division Regional Championship, which will be held Sunday, March 12th, at Metzger Middle School in San Antonio. The eight teams selected to advance, due to their overall performance in the judging areas and scoring in the top 15 match scores, include: 1535 RoBuccaneers, San Antonio Academy of Texas 1536 Team Infinity, San Antonio Academy of Texas
