Name ( A » z ) Name ( Z » a ) Price ( Lowest First ) Price ( Highest First )Setting the right budget How much should you expect to pay? We know it's difficult to estimate how much a project will cost, that's why we've surveyed our tradesmen to give you an idea of how much you should expect to pay for specific jobs.

Tradesmen all across the country have contributed to the cost guides, so the costs you see are an approximate national average. The most common reason that you will need to resize or trim your internal doors is when you are changing your interior décor from wooden floors to carpets, or switching from a thin floor covering to a thicker one. In this case your doors may stick on the carpet, tiles, lino or laminate flooring and not open properly. The simple solution to this problem is to call in a carpenter or joiner to shave a few millimetres from the bottom of the door so that it can swing open easily. The tradesman will have to take the door off its hinges before planing the required amount from the bottom of the door and then sanding it down to a smooth finish if needed. They will also be able to touch up any paintwork on the door as needed. If the door needs substantially resizing then they will usually saw a small amount from the bottom of the door. This may need to be done when a door is being moved to another part of the house or you are radically altering one of the surfaces that the door opens on to by, for example, adding a step or another feature.

In this case the door will be sawn to size before sanding or planing to a finish. It is much easier to make a door smaller than it is to increase a door in size, but a skilled carpenter or joiner will be able to add plywood strips or insulating strips in order to slightly pad a door and stop draughts coming into a room. They will need to sand and paint or stain the door after such an addition, but this should still work out cheaper than buying a new door. Resizing or trimming your hollow internal doors If the door you need to resize is a hollow wooden door then your tradesman may have to do a little more work than simply saw or plane a small section from the bottom of the door. Hollow doors usually have a small area at the base that can be cut or planed to size, but if the adjustment is more than a few millimetres then the carpenter or joiner may have to do some remedial work on the door after cutting it to the required size. In this case they will have to remove the wood trim from the base of the door and some of the padding or composite material from inside the hollow interior door.

They may also choose to purchase and use a new wood trim. Whichever option your tradesman decides upon they will then have to glue the wood trim to the base of or inside the bottom of the door in question. This should then keep the door solid and even. The door will need to be clamped while the wood glue dries before it is ready to be rehung. A similar procedure for resizing or trimming will need to be carried out on the side of the door if it is the width rather than the height of the door that needs adjusting.
