Midtown Parsons Chairs, Set of 2 (Assorted Colors) | Jewell Gold Chevron Swoop Dining Chair | I absolutely hated the material on the seats of my dining room chairs.  I went to a whole bunch of design stores and upholstery shops, only to find out that it would be a pretty significant chunk of change just to get them all recovered.  After doing a little research, I figured that, with a little time, effort, and some help from my friends at Techshop, I could recover my set for under $50.  I MADE IT AT TECHSHOP!  http://www.techshop.wsStep 1: Remove the Seats from the Chairs« PreviousNext »View All Steps Download When you are in the process of making or changing fabric designs of the furniture you may find yourself having to replace the upholstery foam. Perhaps the chair was not as soft as it could be or it lost its softness too quickly. Whatever the reasons, you may wish to replace the upholstery foam. The problem is that there are a lot of products out there that you can use which can make this seemingly easy purchase much more difficult than it has to be.

The following article will help you determine what makes an upholstery good or bad. Thick or Thin: The Choice is Yours You will come to find out rather quickly that the thickness of upholstery foam is varied. Some states have furniture flammable laws so if you are in one of these states (check with your upholsterer) you may be locked in to a certain kind of foam that is rated as fire resistant. If you are lucky and you are left to choosing it on your own then consider the item you are having upholstered. The ultimate use of the furniture will determine how thick the foam should be. Dining room chairs as an example would typically prefer a medium soft foam (2.8 rating) but if you're after extra comfort then you could always go much softer than that if you like. Seat back cushions are typically much firmer than the seat cushion so keep that in mind when having chairs upholstered. The Cost of Upholstery Foam The price for upholstery foam is based on sheets of one specific size and weight as well as thickness in some cases.

Some shops will offer custom sizing and pricing for upholstery foam if you do not need the large pieces will normally sell. Expect the price to be slightly higher per square foot than if you bought in larger sheets and then cut yourself. Upholstery foam can range from $12.00 a sheet (sold in 24 by 24 by 2 inch sections for dining room chairs) to over $126.00 a sheet (6 by 24 by 84 inch). Upholstery foam is rated in density by a 2 digit number ranging from 18 to 35 with a decimal point between the 2 numbers so a #18 foam would be 1.8 foam. This is determined by 2 factors: urethane and air. The more urethane that is present in the foam means that the foam will have a higher density. A #18 foam would translate to 1.8 pounds of urethane in each cubic foot of the foam which equals 12 by 12 by 12 inch. This density foam would not be very popular as a seat cushion because it would be too thin but could make a nice back cushion. The most popular upholstery foam is as follows: 1.8 (extra soft, used as back cushions)

2.4 (comfortable soft, firmer back cushions) 2.7 (soft, Soft seat but firm back cushions) 2.8 (medium soft, medium soft seat) 2.7 (medium, medium seat) 2.8 (firm, typically a 2 inch thick dining room chair) The choice is ultimately up to you.Home / DIY Projects / How to Spray Paint Dining ChairsDo you have a project that you keep putting off?For me it was painting the dining chairs! That is until last weekend when Barry asked, when are you going to paint the dining room furniture and I said…if you will remove the cushions, I guess I’ll paint the chairs today.I can’t believe how spray painting the dining chairs changed the room!(For your convenience affiliate links are included in this post)And when I finished the chairs, I had to paint the china hutch.  You know how it is, one thing leads to another!I used the  HomeRight C800766 Finish Max Fine Finish Sprayer ,  I have used it several times and the results were great and fast. Just like with anything there is a learning curve.

So what if you make a mistake when you first start, it’s water based paint, you can wipe it off. Trust me, you can do it!For this project I used Maison Blanche Vintage Furniture paint and the color is Cobblestone.I was able to paint and wet sand 6 chairs in an afternoon, tiring, but possible 🙂Follow the directions to put your sprayer together, easy and very few parts!  Be safe, use gloves, mask and eye protection.  Wear your paint clothes! Clean your chairs with a degreaser or water and vinegar mixture and get started. This is what I did for my project:1.  Put 1/4 cup clean water in paint cup.2.  Fill  with paint to the 800 ml. line, stir well.  I used a new can of paint.  If I were using a pre-opened can, I would strain the paint, to make sure there were no clumps or trash in it. I mixed up the max amount, after all I was painting 6 chairs.  For smaller amounts follow the thinning directions included with the sprayer or just play around with it, like I did.3.  Use the sprayer to paint the bottoms first and then flip the chairs over to paint the rest.  C

halky based paints dry fast, by the time I painted all 6 chairs, the first one was dry and I just started over.4. Inspect the chairs to make sure you didn’t miss any spots, spray them if you did.  And if you are like me and find that you missed a few spots after you’ve cleaned up, just use a paint brush.5. Wet Sand (video below)6. After the chairs have dried, wax with Maison Blanche Lime Wax or top-coat of your choice.Tips:  Because the paint dries quick, I finished the project the same day.  If you’re going to stop painting for 30 minutes or more, I would wash the sprayer completely and start over when you’re ready.  Occasionally the tip would get a build up of paint on it, I would just scrap that off with my fingernail. This sprayer is easy to use and easy to clean.Chairs lined up on a tarp and ready to be refreshed.I’ll be back with another post about the china hutch and another video about the Maison Blanche Lime Wax!And if that’s not enough,  I’m changing the fabric on the seats.H
