You don’t specify where the “dining tables and chairs” are in the home or if it s an “everyday use” dining table or a formal dining room that is often used (because it is not an eat-in kitchen) or a formal dining room that is rarely used, so I’ll break that down.Everyday dining tables and chairs, whether in the kitchen or the dining area/room are most often purchased as a set. There are many modest homes that have both an “eat-in” kitchen and an informal dining room. It is not necessarily about the cost of the dining table and chairs as much as it is about the cost of the house. These are “sets” I might regularly see in “median-priced” homes, whether in a kitchen eating area or in the dining “room”. I put room in quotes as often there is a doorway sized opening from the dining “room” into the kitchen, but there is no wall between the dining “room” and the living room. Not a “grand, formal dining room” but more of an informal dining room that is separate from the kitchen and kitchen table just the same.

These are not used every day, but they are used more often than “formal” dining rooms. Here are some examples of what I might see often that are bought as “sets”. A set does not always mean uniformity. Some “sets” are a bit eclectic. They might have a bench on one side. They might be counter height with barstool height chairs. They might have four matching chairs, two on either side but with different chairs on the ends. They might have a different color of table than the chairs as in one of the photos below with the white table and gray chairs. If the buyer goes for a 6 chair set vs a 4 chair set, the two ends can be gray or they can be white, but it is still a “set” with the furniture store or manufacturer being the one to add a bit of eclectic flair. In other words “bought as a set” does not have to mean a “matching set”.Formal Dining Rooms purchased as sets are usually “formal” style such as Queen Anne or Chippendale. Not let’s talk a bit about Dining Room Tables and Chairs that are NOT bought as “sets” and why not.

Regardless of price, the store itself makes a difference. If someone is shopping in a Furniture Store or a Department Store, then they will usually buy a set. BUT trendy stores like Crate and Barrel, Room and Board and even IKEA will often sell the tables and chairs separately. They often don’t offer “sets” though they may have recommendations of which chairs to add after the customer choose a table.TABLE FIRST is the general rule in these trendy stores and for the people who shop in them. ALSO even in stores that primarily sell “sets” or “separates”, the store will often display the tables with chairs they choose giving the customer the option to buy as a set (though invoice will show them separately) or not. If a customer says “I really like this table…but not the chairs” then the conversation turns to picking out different chairs. I myself did that with the glass table in the picture below. Not exactly the one I had, but very close. It was shown as a set with very narrow, tall and modern black chairs.

I chose a traditional padded style in yellow. So even when you buy them all at the same time as a “set”, when you have a unique table such as those in the table photo below, it is not uncommon to play around with the chair selection. As to chairs, it is more common to have 4 “side chairs” that match and two end chairs that match one another but do not match the side chairs. Crazy eclectic is only for the very brave or the very overpriced. :)In the U.S. lower price dining tables and chairs are nearly always purchased as a set. That may be different in other countries. As you get up to the higher priced designs, mixing and matching tables and chairs is much more common. Also, interior designers tend to prefer creativity in putting together table and chair combinations. My experience is they’re purchased as a set. Worth noting that the chairs usually wear out before the table (since they do more work). Wholesalers are willing to sell them separately so you can order more (or replacements) through your local retailer.

I have seen tables where every chair was different from each other. It was sort of charming if you don’t mind the eclectic look. Now a days “Most” people buy them as a set”. Because when i consult with lots of people every day regarding thier home decoration or home furniture. The only single answer on this question is modern family demands dining table sets. Here is diffrent types of dining table sets. The reason is quite simple. If bought separately, the chairs and table might not match as well as it could be if it was a set.
