Lifeguard chairs strung up in colorful lights will be displayed in Jacksonville Beach’s Latham Plaza this winter-and the next five winters after that-as the annual holiday event Jacksonville Beach Deck the Chairs becomes officially supported by the city. Deck the Chairs Executive Director Kurtus Loftus signed a five-year agreement with the city for the event in early September. In the agreement, Jacksonville Beach will reserve Latham Plaza and the Seawalk Pavilion for the event, waive city rental fees and provide additional funding for a sound system, signage, lighting and a metal storage building to hold event equipment during the off season. The Deck the Chairs board still needs to find sponsors for the event, pay for security, materials, electrician costs, fencing and clean-up services. The organization also needs to provide the city with necessary permits and a $1 million Special Event liability insurance. “I think the city dug on the idea that we’re bringing something unique, something that the residents really enjoyed, something that visitors really enjoyed and something that promotes the beach without it being attached to some of the typical things that we promote with,” said Loftus.

The agreement also marks several new and permanent additions to the event debuting this year. The largest addition is its Shine Hope and Peace Digital Light Showcase. It’s a 12 minute light show, timed to music, that will be playing periodically every weekend through the event. Lotfus said the board has been planning the light show since January. Jacksonville resident Darren Huffty will program the lights. Jacksonville Beach music school Bach to Rock is putting together a score of traditional holiday songs to sync with the lights. Deck the Chairs board also bought over 6,000 individually programmed lights-half paid by the city-and added five feet to the event’s metal tree. It’s now over 30 ft tall and wider around to hold a programming shed on the inside for the digital light showcase. On to of holding equipment to program all of the lights on the tree, it will also hold a projector to display original graphics on the Seawalk Pavilion wall during the show. Along with programming the lights on the tree, Huffty is programming lights to music on eight surrounding chairs.

He’s put together syncronized holiday light displays in his own front yard for nine years. His display won ABC’s Great Christmas Light Fight in 2014. He’s currently working on selecting animated light patterns and effects for the tree. Each pixel light can be programmed to change colors and blink at any speed. The entire show is coordinated through two computer programs, which will tell eight computer boards in the tree what light patterns to flash and when. “You go by the feel of the music,” said Huffty. “So if the music is very happy and bright and exciting you want the tree to be doing things that really pop and move fast and show action. If the music is slow and somber the tree should be kind of peaceful and look pretty.” For the Shine Hope and Peace Digital Light Showcase, it will take him two weeks to coordinate the entire show, and another couple of days to physically set up the tree, chairs and projector on site. Another permanent addition to the event is Deck the Chairs Community Chairs.

These smaller versions of the red lifeguard chairs are placed in eight different locations throughout the Beaches and dontown Jacksonville and decorated for the holidays. Loftus created Community to expand Deck the Chairs from Latham Plaza and Seawalk Pavilion. Loftus still recalls the first Deck the Chairs in winter 2013. He came up with the event during the summer, when the city was figuring out events to attract visitors to the downtown area during the winter. He talked to city leaders and the Beaches Hospitality Network and Beaches Chamber of Commerce. The city approved the weeks he requested and was giving 18 lifeguard chairs by the Jacksonville Beach Volunteer Lifeguards. That first year featured 16 decorated lifeguard chairs by Jacksonville Beach businesses and raised $9,500 to put on the event. Today, Deck the Chairs, a registered 501C3 non-profit, puts together an annual event that costs between $200,000 and $250,000. A majority of that cost is covered by donations of businesses all across Jacksonville either through money or time.

Loftus said that working with local businesses and artists to create a destination event is the core of what Deck the Chairs is about. With the addition of the light show and the city of Jacksonville Beach officially behind it, he feels that he finally has the foundation to create a landmark event that puts Jacksonville Beach on the map. Jacksonville Beach Deck the Chairs will run from Nov. 25 to Jan. 1, 2017. “This is the thing we hope is happening 30 years down the road that’s still big and beautiful and attracting thousands of people to a city in December, that didn’t have anything,” said Loftus.
