Miroslava Duma, or Mira as she is known to her 600,000-odd Instagram followers, knows a thing or two about social media. ‘Digital is the future,’ says the fashion editor and creator of the Buro 24/7 website.
‘Just look at things like Facebook and Instagram and how they’ve changed our lives. To think someone woke up one day and came up with the idea of Instagram and just sold it for a billion dollars…’ At the start of this year, Duma gave people a social media platform through which they could interact with her directly. after an image was posted on Buro 24/7, depicting Garage magazine editor Dasha Zhukova perched atop a chair created from the mannequin of a black woman, people used Duma’s Instagram to criticise her judgment. Apart from an apology posted on her account, Duma has stayed silent on the issue but the controversy hasn’t slowed her down. We meet in London before her panel discussion at the Vogue Festival. Duma, former editor of Harper’s Bazaar Russia, stands a fraction over 5ft tall – but you’d be foolish to underestimate her. If you recognise her, it’s probably because she’s one quarter of a group of women affectionately dubbed ‘the Russian mafia’.
The clique includes fashion designers Vika Gazinskaya and Ulyana Sergeenko – the latter of whom dressed Rihanna for the MTV Movie Awards – and Elena Perminova, wife of Russian businessman Alexander Lebedev. If the spotlight in fashion is on Russia, they have a lot to do with it. ‘I’m really happy because the world had never heard anything about Russia in terms of fashion before,’ says Duma. ‘They know us for ballet and things like that but not for fashion.’ It’s their no-holds-barred approach to high-end fashion and bold, look-at-me accessories that’s won them a following. But Duma says it’s important to put that in the context of Russia’s history. ‘After the Revolution in 1917, for almost 80 years there was stagnation,’ she says. ‘Everyone had to look the same. If you saw a woman who looked beautiful and extravagant, she could have gone to prison or be accused of being crazy and looking up to the West.’ Their more-is-more approach, then, is a reaction to that.
With her impeccable taste and social influence, it’s unsurprising Duma is a fixture at the shows and has major selling power. But her influence goes beyond the clothes on her back. While she didn’t start out with the intention of gaining attention, Duma quickly saw it as a business opportunity. The big plan has always been to foster these relationships to use for her own baby, Buro 24/7, a sort of Huffington Post for the sartorially inclined founded with an investor and childhood friend Fira Chilieva. ‘I’ve always understood that the interest in me will not last forever so I’ve used my profile to promote Buro 24/7,’ says Duma.’ With everyone I collaborate with I show how professional, passionate and committed my team are so the next time they contact me, it’s to work with Buro and not just me.’ The site was created in 2011 to plug a gap, says Duma: just because women are interested in fashion, that doesn’t mean they’re not also into architecture, cinema, lifestyle or beauty.
