Window Arms & FittingsCaravan living no holiday for Taranaki family of six A young family have been forced to live in a caravan on a relatives property after Housing NZ deemed them not a priority for housing. A Taranaki family of six, including a toddler with cerebral palsy, have been living in a caravan in a paddock as they wait for a Housing New Zealand home.Courtney Rudolph, her partner Reilly Gardner are upset that, with their 18-month-old daughter Sophia's disability, they haven't been given priority status by the Ministry of Social Development to find a Housing NZ home. The couple and their four children were renting a property in Inglewood but three months ago were given 90 days to vacate after getting behind in the $300 a week payments. Courtney Rudolph, 24, with her children clockwise from top Sophia, 18 months, Capri, 7, Paris, 3, Devynn, 5. The family are living out of a caravan while they wait for a Housing New Zealand home. Gardner lost his tractor driving job when the seasonal work dried up and they could not afford to meet payments and living expenses on Rudolph's study link allowance of $390.Since receiving the eviction notice the couple and their children have applied with the Ministry (MSD) to get a housing New Zealand home, but are yet to secure one."

They told us to go and stay in a caravan park or with friends, but we don't know anyone who can take six of us."The pair have tried to get other private rentals but a chequered renting history hindered that. Emergency housing, women's refuge and the Citizen's Advise Bureau have not turned up any temporary living arrangement either. Now the family are living in a caravan powered by an extension cord from Rudolph's mother Glennis Julian's woolshed studio north of Urenui."A mum in a caravan with four kids, it's not ideal but you do what you have to," Rudolph said."If the Ministry could sort out what we are doing, where we are on the list and how long we will be here we could handle it." While Rudolph and Gardner along with one of their children sleep in the caravan, two other daughters sleep on bunk beds inside the woolshed, along with Sophia. "We're eligible but not classed as high priority, if we had no caravan we would be. There's six of us and nowhere to go, a caravan in a paddock and one child with cerebral palsy, I thought we would be [high priority]," Rudolph said."

It would be nice if they could say a house is available at such and such a time. It needs to be flat level because eventually Sophia will be in a wheelchair and a two storey house wouldn't work."MSD general manger housing Marama Edwards said the ministry was working with Rudolph to find her family a place to live."They've told us they need a house, and that they had been given notice to move by this Friday. While Rudolph first approached MSD on May 22, the ministry only received additional information needed to complete the application and place the family on the social housing register for house on Tuesday, Edwards said."We've let Ms Rudolph know that we feel a caravan is unsuitable, and in the meantime we had encouraged her to contact us to look into emergency housing."Julian, who raised Rudolph, said the whole situation had been a strain on her daughter."She's been in a terrible state at times, almost breaking down. It's a nightmare for her," Julian said."This is too much. They don't deserve this."

Rudolph, who had been studying early childhood, admitted the ordeal had taken a toll on her confidence."I feel awful that we have nowhere to stay, I feel bad."She was now trying to decide what to do with her two eldest children once the school holidays finished. They currently go to Inglewood Primary but may have to change to Mimi School which is closer. But if a home was found elsewhere they'd have to move all over again."I didn't think it would come to this, I thought they would find one. I'm hoping they come up with one soon. That's the hard part just waiting hoping something comes up."Welcome to Heron Views! Rooms: 2 Bedroom with open plan Kitchen and Dining room, quality fitted Bathroom with Toilet, Shower and Basin.
