Your session is about to expire due to inactivity. Get Daily Dallas News HeadlinesSign Up They're popping up everywhere. All the rage, bunk beds are the trendy new way to sleep. Designers and architects are transforming ordinary rooms into group quarters for kids, extended family and overnight guests. The advantages are many. Families look to bunk beds to optimize space and add useful storage. Stacked beds offer parents the opportunity to take advantage of vertical space, leaving the floor open for kids to play or study. Children love them, too. It's no surprise kids enjoy the small, protected spaces and sense of privacy the beds provide. "They give kids a place of their own to sleep, a place to play and a place to put their stuff," says Mark Hoesterey, architect and owner of Stocker Hoesterey Montenegro Architects in Dallas. Hoesterey constructs beds for clients in Dallas and at the Long Cove lake community in East Texas. "A kid's natural instinct is to seek out areas of shelter.

Bunk beds are an area of refuge, safety and security because they're smaller in scale," he says. No longer rickety steel or wood contraptions with questionable ladders, these bunks display a sophisticated, built-in design with elements created to mirror the style of a home. "A built-in gives a homeowner more ability to customize and reflects the home design," says John Boyd, architect and interior designer, John Boyd & Associates, Dallas. Bunk beds and bunk rooms with multiple beds are becoming a staple of vacation and second homes. Reminiscent of a dormitory sleeping porch, these are decidedly more upscale. Walls of bunk beds may share space with trundle beds, Murphy beds and beds in cozy nooks. Not just for kids "They appeal to the secondary market. A variety of people use them: older children, men for a guys weekend, or women for a girls weekend. The extended family may come to visit," says Boyd, project architect for Long Cove. Bunk beds offer extra sleep space for grown-ups.

The versatility of their design allows them to be used for multiple purposes. "In some cases we make them for adults. We'll put a queen over a queen, or a twin over a queen. It gives families flexibility. Other times they'll be used for Adventure Guide campouts, where a parent and child sleep together, or for a business retreat," says Hoesterey. Whether added to new or existing homes, the construction of built-in bunk beds requires careful planning. First, it's important to consider the size of the space and the location of doors. "You need 16 feet as a minimum if you're going to put them end-to-end. If you'll be using twin beds side-by-side, you'll need 12 feet," Boyd says. Entry doors, closet doors and doors to bathrooms should allow ample space for access to and around the beds. Plan ahead Features and fixtures should also be planned. Design elements run the gamut from hidden cubbies and individual reading lights to USB ports and track curtains. Bookshelves add an important dimension and allow children to customize the space with pictures, books and art.

"Decide if you want it to be a space for sleeping only or a space with function, and consider how to individualize it," Hoesterey says. Selecting a designer and builder to do the work requires attention also. Because the beds are constructed similar to cabinets, both Hoesterey and Boyd recommend hiring an experienced millwork contractor. "The cabinetmaker must work hand-in-hand with the designer and architect. There are a lot of decorative decisions that need to be made. Try to tie the cabinet design into the rest of the house," says Boyd. Read on for Boyd's and Hoesterey's ideas for features to include and the construction factors to take into consideration. All about the construction Here are construction factors to consider from John Boyd. * Consider the size and age of the child who will use the bed. * Plan larger bed sizes for adults.* Allocate more floor space than is needed. * Eliminate doors in the room design. * Have walls with a 9-foot minimum height. * Ensure sleepers will be able to sit up in bed.
