Such rents are higher than the cost of leasing an entire home in the suburbs of some satellite areas such as the Illawarra. Rooms in Bondi, Woolloomooloo or Millers Points are being advertised at even higher rents — in some cases as high as $600 a week for two people.

REA Group chief economist Nerida Conisbee said homeowners could charge such excessive rents because many renters valued location above anything else. These renters often struggled to afford the excessive rents being charged near beaches and the CBD, she said. “Sharing a room is all some people can afford if they want to live somewhere central,” Ms Conisbee said. “Comparing the city’s average rent with people’s average income shows most people are spending more than a third of their income on rents and it’s even harder for low-income earners.” .au co-founder Thomas Clement said people sharing rooms with strangers often were happy to “just have a place to sleep”. Some of the people leasing rooms as shared accommodation were actually renters themselves looking for a roommate, Mr Clement added. “They get permission from their landlord to get someone in, usually because they’re struggling to pay the rent on their own,” he said. Jack Thorne recently moved into a shared room in North Bondi thinking it would counter the stiff competition he had encountered in trying to find a normal living arrangement.

2016/17: Australia’s year of wild weather The 23-year-old said he was initially nervous about what it would be like to share a room with someone he didn’t know. Their living arrangement was awkward at first but became easier once the pair got to know each others routines, he said. It helped that they went to bed and woke up at similar times. Mr Thorne said he works a busy job and spent little time at home, making it easier to share a room. Follow us on Twitter for more news, tips and inspiration.
