Bumbo recall a parental failure Excuse my mocking tone on the Bumbo recall, but have we lost our minds? I mock because Health Canada is telling Canadian consumers to stop using the infant seat, and contact Bumbo for a free repair kit, including a restraint belt and information on how to use the seat.
Since 2007, there have been five incidents resulting in three minor injuries. That’s right, in the past five years, three kids got boo-boos, so it’s time for a massive safety warning! What our kids need are more seat belts. Then life will be fine. Yes, this is the most coddled generation. There are 340,000 Bumbos in Canada, 4.6 million in the U.S., and this is the second time they’ve been recalled. The last time was to place a warning sticker on the chair reminding parents not to place the molded foam seat on counter tops or tables. This time, the U.S. is reporting 21 skull fractures as a result of the Bumbo – or maybe more specifically improper parenting. Why don’t we stop neglecting our kids instead? Hey, I’m not immune. I pay far too much attention to my iPhone. I know I do. I know I need to stop. And every parent needs some time to catch their breath. Some times, parents even need to pee. That’s why the “circle of neglect” was created.
OK, maybe not specifically why, but it’s one reason. My kids are now well out of the Bumbo age range. In fact, the window of time when the Bumbo is appropriate is quite short. Kids move from being able to hold their heads up – the starting point for the Bumbo – to far too wiggly to constrain in the floor seat in a remarkably short period of time. But it’s a decent little tool when they can use it. It means they can get their faces and drool off the carpet, that they can see the world. And, yes, I’ll admit we put the Bumbo on the dining room table, so our child could eat dinner with us – or at least toss his dinner at us. But we were watching him. Not once did we have a Bumbo mishap. There is no reason for Bumbo to recall these chairs other than the fact that parents aren’t doing their job. Maybe it’s the parents who need the seat belt?
