BTS

(Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a South Korean boy band that was formed in 2010 and debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment.The septet—consisting of members Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V, and Jungkook—co-writes and co-produces much of their own output. Originally a hip hop group, their musical style has evolved to include a wide range of genres. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth and coming of age, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work also often references literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternative universe storyline.

The group's name, BTS, stands for the Korean phrase Bangtan Sonyeondan (Korean: 방탄소년단; Hanja: 防彈|少年|團), literally meaning "Bulletproof Boy Scouts". According to member J-Hope, the name signifies the group's desire "to block out stereotypes, criticisms, and expectations that aim on adolescents like bullets". In Japan, they are known as Bōdan Shōnendan (防弾少年団), which translates similarly.

Musical style

BTS co-write and produce much of their own output.Since their inception, BTS have had an emphasis on hip hop as their musical base largely due to the influence of RM and Suga's background as underground rappers and their main producer Pdogg.

Lyrical themes

Since their inception, BTS have believed that telling their story is the best way for the younger generation to relate to their music. Writing the majority of their own lyrics, the group incorporates universal life experiences, such as sadness and loneliness, in their work and turn them into something more light and manageable.

The lyrical themes explored in the songs and albums of BTS have included diverse themes such as the issues of social identity in youth, anxieties of school-age youth, and mental health in youth culture.

BTS has been the recipient of many awards and honors, including  Mnet Asian Music Awards,  Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, Seoul Music Awards, seven Korean Music Awards, Gaon Chart Music Awards, nine Billboard Music Awards, nine American Music Awards, and nine MTV Video Music Awards. BTS is also the first group in history to win Top Song Sales Artist at the Billboard Music Awards and earn five consecutive wins for Top Social Artist.

Having sold over 32.7 million albums on the Gaon Music Chart, BTS is the best-selling musical artist in South Korean history, and hold six multi-Million albums and five Platinum streaming singles. In the United States, BTS is the first Korean group to receive RIAA certification, and currently holds one Triple Platinum single, one Double Platinum single, three Platinum albums, three Platinum singles, four Gold singles, and one Gold album. In Japan, BTS is the first male foreign artist to receive a Million certification for a single, and the only foreign artist to receive Diamond certification for a single; the group additionally has three multi-Platinum singles, two multi-Platinum albums, four Platinum albums, and five Gold albums in the country. In the United Kingdom, BTS is the first Korean group to receive BPI certification, and currently holds seven Silver singles, one Gold single, one Platinum single, five Silver album certifications,and three Gold album certifications.
