Indentured

So what do you know about us? We talk funny, dance funny, eat funny and probably even look funny but what do you know about us? Well let me tell you about us. Let me tell you about what is is to be South African Indian. For my friend you will see that to be South African Indian takes a special kind of fortitude.

While many believe we got here on some romantic boat cruise let me paint a picture for you of who we are. Let me unpack for you the treacherous deceit and wretched lies that brought us to this country that we call home. This country that we were born in and helped build however recently we retain feelings of somehow not belonging. If any of our contemporary politics are to be believed then let me tell you about our forced journey from non-white to non-black. Let me tell you about the heart ache of being South African Indian.

Many of us suffered though you hardly noticed as it is the ancient Indian way not to complain and NEVER to show pain. It is the ancient Indian way to constantly delay gratitude, maybe next year, maybe the year after, maybe the next decade. Because that is who we are. The hard grafters, the early starters, at the crack of dawn risers. Never faltering, never making excuses. Always persevering, placing our families at the center of our existence.

Let me tell you who we are. We are a proud people. With a proud heritage and rich culture dominated by an ancient community spirit. We are a conscientious super tribe that have never feared hard work and have never faltered under the whip. And yes there were whips. When our women were raped and men were killed. When they tossed our sick and weak over into the ocean, we stood tall and unshaken. We looked forward, wiped away our tears, and soldiered on.

This my friend is what it takes to be South African Indian. Take this invite. Get to know us.
