BMW 1 Series 3 Door Hatch 114d With positive responses to its initial line 2-door 1 Series Coupes, the German marque has produced 3- and 5-door variations on the 114 platform while maintaining its compact form. Compared to the 2-door 120d, BMW managed to shorten the both 114s by 36mm, working in the hatch on the 3-door with minimal alteration to its Coupe underpinnings. The 3-door 114d, the smallest of the new entry-level models, makes use of BMW's sturdy 1.6-liter 4-cylinder "TwinPower" turbodiesel. With a line entry of "90hp" on its spec sheet, the 3-door might conjure thoughts of 1960s Eastern Bloc automobiles, but with a variable-vane turbo and 6-speed manual transmission helping to build 173 ft-lb of torque at 1500 rpms, the 3036-pound machine won't embarrass itself when the light turns green.

Beneath its shell, the 3-door benefits from numerous BMW staples, featuring its 5-link rear suspension and electronic acronyms galore to aid anything that involves using the steering wheel or pedals, including ABS, CBC (Cornering Brake Control), DBC (Dynamic Brake Control), DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control). The 3-door 114d also comes with a cabin full of BMW's digital and interface advancements through ConnectDrive, and its EfficientDynamics initiative is expressed throughout the car in 10 different energy-saving elements. If there's one thing that stands out about the 3-door 114d for 2013, it's how far the concept and execution of a gateway BMW has come over the past few decades. I can't say if this version of the 114d will reach the same cult status that its boxy, bare-bones brethren like the 318 or 320 once achieved, but based on the sheer volume of electronic gizmos and trickle-down engineering advancements found within this base 114, BMW is clearly more concerned about over-delivering with this high-volume hatch than saving the best for its pricier performers.

Like the other hatchbacks shown in Paris, final pricing is forthcoming. BMW 1 Series 5 Door Hatch 114d If the 3-door 114d is little more than the 2-door coupe with its trunk traded in for a more expansive rear cabin, its 5-door is a fundamental shift on what's contained within 114's wheelbase. Fitting two additional doors to the 114 comes with no changes to the car's height, width or length, or reduction to luggage capacity within the hatch's fifth door, which narrows the 5-door's list of possible buyers. With rear seats better suited for children or the diminutive, BMW has answered the "what if someone asks for a 5-door version of our 3-door 114d" question by manufacturing a family-friendly 1 Series, but it's worth asking whether the Bavarians should have left that question unanswered and steered interested, budget-minded buyers towards a no-frills 3 Series. The 5-door mirrors the 3-door with the same powerplant, transmission, suspension, brakes and electronics. Adding two more doors, seats and all of the related hardware and bits involved would normally come with a noticeable jump in curb weight, but the 5-door comes in just 11 pounds over the 3-door and also has an extra five ponies—95hp total—to compensate.

BMW 1 Series 3 Door Hatch 120d BMW's zeal for hatchbacks has also extended into the existing 120 range, with a 3-door diesel powered by its larger, angrier 2.0-liter "TwinPower" turbodiesel. The extra 400ccs of capacity found in the 120d comes with 184hp, more than double what the 3-door 114d has to offer and, at least in terms of smallish Euro sedans, generates a (miniature) stump-pulling 280 ft-lb of torque at 1750 rpms, a significant increase over the 114d's 173 at 1500. Like the other two rear-drive hatchbacks, the 120d comes equipped with a manual 6-speed transmission as standard, but is the only hatch that offers BMW's 8-speed Steptronic auto-box for those who prefer automation. The 3-door 120d sports the same length (4324mm), width (1765mm) and height (1421mm) at the 3- and 5-door 114s, yet comes with a front and rear track that's 14mm and 13mm narrower, respectively, than the 114s. If there's a curiosity—and one that's not particularly favorable—with the hatchback version of the 120d, it's the disconnect between the significant bump in power and torque and what's required to put that energy to the ground and through the corners.

Simply put, how BMW arrived at the conclusion that marrying the narrow track of the 114d--a car with modest intentions under the hood--to the 120d's I-can-do-burnouts-and-carve-through-canyons powerplant is mystifying. Granted, there's little chance BMW approached the 3-door 120d with visions of Le Mans and Sebring in mind, but once it fitted its 2.0-liter turbodiesel to the chassis, its designers should have known that buyers would be tempted to use the power for something more than visits to the local drag strip. BMW has attempted to counter the 120d's narrower track width with 16-inch 205/55 tires, an extra 10mm over the 114's 195/55s on the same diameter wheels, but its road holding footprint is still questionable, at best. Curb weight for this 3-door is a more-than-acceptable 3113 pounds, and it comes with the same complement of driving aids, connectivity and efficiency-minded accoutrements found in the 114s. With three hatchback models aimed at a younger audience, BMW will soon find out whether the loaded 114s will spark interested based on the abundance of value they offer, and if the sporty 120d can win people over with the gem tucked under the hood.
