Blue

Shaili

Her heart beat faster and faster...With each passing moment she felt like she was going to faint with exhilaration. This was it.

I breathe in the night's air, all sweet pines. There is no moon, but there are thousand stars up in the sky spread over the infinite universe. I don't know why but I am feeling poetic today. The music cranks up, and the party begins, ruining the moment of peace I'd stolen.

"Let's get partying!!! David screams over the mic. Standing on the DJ, people cheer and hoot in response. And some raise their glasses up to toast. I laugh joining the club. Guys all get together and start dancing on the spot, being guys. I was enjoying from afar but then David drags me to the floor. I start dancing moving my legs and hands in smooth steps. Girls from our group join in and it goes on for some time.

I snap out from the heat of the moment, and look around the scene. The backyard seems to light up and vibrate with the beat of music. Suddenly, a girl who is staring at me catches my eye and smiles. I smile back, wondering who she is. I shrug, thinking it may be one of David's "acquaintances" and keep dancing. Sometime later, I stole a glance again at the spot where she was standing, but it's empty. A pang chips away at my heart. She was beautiful.

Tired and breathless, I go back to sit and take a drink to revitalize. David follows, and I think I should use this opportunity to ask about the girl. I attempt to clear my throat but then realize he probably can't hear me in loud music. I grab a beer, and with a cheesy excuse whisk him away from the group of ladies he was so expertly entertaining.

"What's up?" He asks coolly. I lean close to shout in his ear. "WHO'S THAT GIRL?" I point at the girl dancing gracefully but crazily with her group of friends. His eyes follow the direction of my fingers, as soon as he sees, he smiles and takes a large sip of his drink. I wonder, what is he thinking?

"What do you care?" He asks me in a pretend-annoyed voice. "You asking me that question is equal to me punching you in the face. I will ask again, who is that girl?" I snap back. David finds this awfully amusing because he is bent over and shaking from laughter. I roll my eyes, pull him back up and smile patiently.

"You dumb asshole! She's in our English class, and Chemistry class, and Sociology. God knows we see her everyday." He's still chuckling but I can't believe it. How is it possible? Was I so self-absorbed that I couldn't even look around as to who was in the same class?

David's gone and I'm dumbstruck. So dumbstruck, I forgot to ask for her name. Now there's no use going back there and pestering him for answers. I still decide to get a drink and may be I'll...I don't know. Walking back, I see David is talking to her. She blushes and slaps him on the arm. Ouch! He mouths and both of them double over, laughing.

My blood boils and I stare hard, a few seconds later David sees me and straightens his posture in serious mode. The girl follows his line of sight and sees me, I soften with the pretty look on her eyes.

Without saying anything to David, she comes straight towards me. Coming closer, she grabs my hand and says, "Let's dance." I look at David confused, he grins broadly in response lifting his thumb up in encouragement. I smile but I have no idea what's happening. Did he just set me up? That would be the obvious assumption.

We both reach the floor, and she takes the first step to begin. I realize now, her dancing is crazy like if I hadn't seen it, my life would've been incomplete. She moves funnily, but what's sexy is she doesn't give a care to who's watching. I've never seen her dance before. So this is new. She makes these expressions in the heat of the moment and I love it. My heart skips a beat. Nope. That is not good. I was standing still and observing her then she pulls me and signals me to dance. I snap out of the deliria and go on to my crazy dancing.

Her hair is begging to go wild, but she has clutched some part of it high above her neck. Her friends and mine join in and she is a little hesitant to be crazy but then she shrugs, and continues probably, the hell? Who cares?

I pull her closer. Her eyes go wide in surprise. My hands float up to her face, caressing her soft cheeks. Taking the opportunity, going more upwards, I flick the clutch open. The hair drops down to her shoulders and waist. Smiling, now she realized my motive. She closes her eyes, her face hanging low, smiling in embarrassment or blushing. Her cheeks are already red due to the dancing, so it is hard to tell whether it was because she is blushing? Or not. The world around us is still dancing, there is music. But we were still in our own bubble.

I had set the hair free, allowing them to go wild. She touches her hair, letting her fingers mangle with it a little. With a little movement, the front of her hair, drops down and covers her eyes partially. With those half hidden eyes, she looks up at me. Blowing her hair out of her eyes, she resumes gyrating. I'm blown away, there's no going back now.

Her hair swings left to right, bobs up and down. She stops and looks up at the sky, admiring the sight. Her shoulders lift up as she takes a deep breathe. And whispering something to her friends and giving me a smile, she saunters back to find a sitting spot. But no, she's not going to sit. She picks up her purse and flicks it on her shoulder. She is quietly going to back out of the party.

I hurry over the gate. She has already walked farther up from the house. "Hey!" I call out. She's still walking. She takes off her shrug, revealing a sleeveless tank top and a tattooed back below her shoulders. I run faster, and reach her. She turns, hearing my footsteps and smiles. I slow my pace to walk beside her. "Where you going?" I ask.

"Home." She answers softly. She's a little breathless from dancing but she did just hurry like the world was ending.

"Why? The party just started." I stated. She rolls her eyes and says, "It's 1:00 in the morning, Christian."

"Yep. Sorry." I say apologetic. But before she could say anything else, I ask, "What's your name? I don't remember seeing you." I expect more eye-rolling and annoyed gesture. But she smiles in understanding which surprises me a bit.

"Blue." She tells. "You have seen me. You just didn't see this." She adds waving her hands over herself. I stay silent, confused. She notices that silence and explains, "Hello! Introvert here!!!"
