Even spraying it with a disinfectant will not remove the odor of old food. Our child has used this seat for over 6 months now and I can't wait to throw out the seat cover and get a new one....no matter how much you try soaking it/washing it the food and smell doesn't come out. ours has permanent stains that look horrible. another negative point about the chair is how heavy it is. it is not nearly as easy to roll around as one would think. on the plus side, the seat is very sturdy, the tray is easy to clean, and the design is great.
