Rock with Bill Haley and the Comets is the title of an early rock and roll music compilation album issued by Essex Records (ESLP 202) in 1954, and featuring music by the titular group, Bill Haley & His Comets. The album features recordings made by Haley in 1952 and 1953, including his hits, "Rock the Joint" and "Crazy Man Crazy". The album is the earliest known LP release of the rock and roll genre, predating similar releases by Elvis Presley and by Haley himself, as he and his band later went on to Decca Records and recorded "Rock Around the Clock". All the songs on this album were previously released as singles under the Essex banner, including several that were originally released when the band used the name Bill Haley and the Saddlemen. The album does not include any of the tracks Haley and the Comets recorded in 1954 before moving to Decca, nor are any of the tracks from 1951-52 included that Haley recorded for Essex's sister label, Holiday Records (although later releases of Haley's Essex label work would include these tracks).

Essex leased this album out to numerous other labels that subsequently issued it under their own brand. This includes Somerset Records, Paragon Records, Reo Records, Transworld, and Quality Records. Note: no drums were used on tracks 1, 2, 12. According to the Haley biography Sound and Glory by John W. Haley and John von Hoelle (Dyne-American, 1990), numerous other individuals participated on backing vocals on 7, including record executive Jerry Blaine. & FREE Shipping on orders over $35. 29 used & new from The Best Of Bill Haley 1951-1954 [CD] FREE Shipping on orders over . Bill Haley And The Saddlemen In the mid 40s Bill Haley performed with a Country & Western group the The Down Homers he left in 1946. Returning to Philadelphia Haley then formed his own band called Bill Haley & Four Aces Of Western Swing that enjoyed quite a local popularity. David L. Miller who held Holiday (9) had the earliest Saddlemen's releases on the label. By 1951 Miller launched a new label called Essex Records (3) and of course enroled the local Country & Western band and he suggested to rename the band to "Bill Haley and the Saddlemen". Along side Western Swing numbers the group started to perform and record R&B tunes such as Rocket 88 / Tearstains on My Heart or Rock The Joint / Icy Heart and early Pop R&R as Dance With A Dolly (With A Hole In Her Stockin') / Rocking Chair On The Moon Miller then soon repeat the suggestion that the group change their name again, this time for Bill Haley And His Comets after the Halley's Comet.
