We had been living in our 1930s bungalow on a steep slope in the Mendip Hills for many years and continually found the modest-sized north-facing living-room dull and depressing. The biggest problems were the small french-doors, a garden full of huge trees and no direct sunlight. So after a
lot of planning and discussion with Bristol Bi-fold, a structural engineer and our builder, we d...ecided to remove almost the entire external wall to install 3m wide bi-fold doors. We also removed an internal wall extending the living room into the hallway and thus bringing much needed direct sunlight into the room. A year earlier tree-surgeons cleared the garden of several large trees opening up the plot and revealing the view beyond. We are delighted with the result! A bigger, brighter room with a great view. But even if there was no view, the doors alone are a thing of beauty. We visited other showrooms but none could marry quality with an affordable price tag. We managed to source a reclaimed cast iron pillar to support an overhang at the end of our extension, which meant we could go for a no-cornerpost bifold option. This means ...that when the doors are folded back we have two aspects which open directly onto our new patio. We have the doors open a lot, and what we love is that they glide open really easily- meaning that the kids are able to open them themselves ( as Lily is demonstrating here!) We are also really pleased with the apex window above the bifold, letting in maximum light, and Bristol bifold also supplied our other windows for the extension, so it all blends in brilliantly.
