If you’re worried about it, we suggest reassessing your hair regimen: Switching out your shampoo for one that’s targeted to help treat thinning dry or adding an exfoliating scalp treatment to your shower routine might be the fix you need. Supplements are another route to explore as well. Below, we're sharing Philip Kingsley hair and scalp expert Anabel Kingsley's five tips for combatting hair loss.




Whether it's that individuals with longer locks should avoid tight hairstyles ("because they put extreme stress on the hair and scalp, resulting in a type of hair loss called 'traction alopecia'") or that you should try to reduce your anxiety about it (because "stress is known to exacerbate hair thinning"), Kingsley's recommendations are spot on. Kingsley suggests using a stimulating scalp mask regularly to help cleanse and tone your scalp. “Hair grows its best from a healthy scalp that is free from flakes, excessive yeasts, and bacteria. Ingredients to look for are stimulants (such as menthol, camphor, and methyl nicotinate), gentle exfoliants (like betaine salicylate), and anti-androgens (such as zinc and Vitamin B6),” she adds. "Those with thinning hair have fewer or finer hairs, meaning that there is less surface area for sebum (oil) to be distributed over. As a result, roots tend to get greasy faster, creating limpness,” Kingsley explains. “Cleanse regularly with a body building shampoo to give hair added volume and remove excess oils, grease, and dirt.”




“Brittle hair snaps easily, reducing overall body and density. If your hair is dry, processed, or below shoulder length, a weekly pre-shampoo conditioning treatment will help restore strength and bounce.” “It is vital that individuals suffering from hair loss and thinning hair take a holistic approach to treatment,” encourages Kinglsey. “While using styling products that give immediate satisfaction is highly important to self-esteem, addressing underlying factors that may be exacerbating the loss are also key to long-term improvement; and these all take time, so it’s important to be patient.” “There are three main causes of thinning hair we encounter in our clinics: breakage, sensitivity to normal levels of circulating hormones, and dietary deficiencies — often a combination of these are present." Kingsley suggests using a treatment regime that combats each cause separately. “Forming the main bulk of each strand, amino acids (proteins) are the building blocks for hair growth,” Kinglsey explains.




“However, as hair is non-essential tissue it will be the last to receive any you intake through your diet, and the first to suffer from a deficiency.
