In all honesty, I’m a really bad sleeper. I tend to sleep very lightly, I’ve always woken up a handful of times every night, and my mind is always whirring. Getting a good night’s sleep is crucial to me being able to keep up with my hectic schedule, along with healthy eating habits, and keeping up with a regular exercise regimen. Not to mention the fact I’m often jetlagged, which doesn’t help either! If my sleep falls off, everything else suffers. I’ve found a few remedies over the years that help me a great deal (read this blog post about how to turn your bedroom into a cozy sanctuary), but none quite come close to my latest discovery. I heard about the Sleep Number mattress through a friend who has one with his boyfriend, and said that he was finally sleeping soundly for the first time in years. Since we were moving house, I did some serious research for Mackenzie and I, and was instantly convinced. It has DualAir technology rather than inner-springs, so it adjusts to the level of firmness on both sides: so each of us can set it to our preferred Sleep Number setting.

You can lift the head side to read, and lift the feet end for added comfort – I sound like I’m nerding out about this bed because I totally am – it’s changed my life! I also thought it was so cool that it can track your sleep quality by sensing your movements. These days there are tons of sleeping apps that help you calculate what time you should wake up based on your sleep cycle, and can even set off your alarm at the optimal time – when you’re in a lighter part of sleep, making it easier to jump out of bed. The Sleep Number mattress can be hooked up to these apps through your smart devices – so awesome. We’ve been sleeping on the i10 King mattress with the FlexFit 3 adjustable base for a few weeks now, and I’m hooked. Firstly, just being able to have control over the firmness is life changing. It contours to your body, which relieves soreness and stiffness that may make it difficult to fall asleep. Plus, it’s just so comfy that I’m able to drift off much faster.

If you’re in the market for a new mattress, I definitely recommend visiting your local Sleep Number store, where they can even find you the best mattress tailored to your sleep issues and needs. Best Sleep Positions for Sciatica Pain Your sciatic nerve pain is acting up and it is time for bed. You are uncomfortable and you need a good night’s rest.

What are the best positions for those suffering from sciatica pain? Unfortunately, there have been no scientific studies completed on the best sleep positions for sciatica pain. Also, there is a minimum amount of medical information available on the best sleep position. As someone who suffers from occasional sciatica pain, here are my desired positions for sleep when my sciatica is bothering me: • Sleeping on my side • Sleeping on my stomach • Sleeping on my back The position I favor the most when I have pain is either lying on my side or on my stomach. Also, I noticed a great firm surface aids in a good night’s sleep. For example, our master bedroom has a very soft mattress. On a rare occasion, I will sleep in our guest room which has a very hard mattress. This hard surface beats sleeping on our hardwood floors or our squishy leather couches. But, most importantly if I am lying on my side, I need extra pillows to support my head and shoulders and knees.

First, I adjust my head pillow to make sure it is slightly under my shoulders. I want my neck to be aligned and level with my spine. I do not own any of those huge fluffy pillows because if I used one, I would wake up with a pain in my neck. Next, I place two to three pillows under my knee closest to the ceiling when I am lying sideways. This seems to alleviate the pressure on my lower back and sciatica nerve. In an article written by Lauren Farrelly, she had some similar tips for sleeping on your side when you have sciatic pain. • First lie on your side, whichever one is more comfortable for you, on a flat and firm mattress. • Place your head on one or two pillows so that your head is even with your spine. You want to keep your back and neck in as straight a line as possible. • Next, bend your knee that is furthest from the mattress upwards toward your hips. • Place two or three pillows under your knee so that your leg is supported. • Try and sleep in this position for as long as you can.
