Sewing a papasan chair cushion is not as complicated as it seems. The generous depth and soft roundness of a papasan chair makes it a comfortable place to read or relax, but even the most lovingly cared-for papasan cushion can start to show its age. New cushions may be pricey, but you don’t have to replace the entire thing. A new cushion cover will take your papasan chair from raggedy to ravishing in no time. Measure your papasan cushion from seam to seam. Double that number and add 3 inches for seam allowances and irregularities in the cushion’s shape. Most papasan chairs are 54 inches in diameter and 3 inches thick, but measure to make sure. Fold your fabric in half, right side to right side, and lay it out on the floor. Smooth out all wrinkles. Pin the four corners so the fabric doesn’t slip out of alignment. Place your papasan cushion in the center of the fabric. Tug out any wrinkles in the new fabric layers that may have developed when you were getting the cushion settled. Trace a circle 2 inches out from the edge of the cushion with fabric marker or chalk.

If you trace right next to the cushion, you won’t allow enough room for its depth. Trace another circle 1 inch outside of the first. This is the cut line. Cut out the fabric, being careful to keep the two layers aligned with each other. Pin the two pieces of fabric together by placing straight pins every few inches. Put the pins in perpendicular to the edge to make it easier to remove them as you sew the cushion cover closed. Leave an opening through which to slip the cushion. The best way to judge how big an opening you need is to roll the cushion tightly up and measure the circumference of the roll. Sew the cushion cover seam, pulling out the straight pins as you go. Cut strips of hook-and-loop tape to fit the two pieces of fabric left at the opening. Attach the tape either by sewing one piece down to each opening flap, or use no-sew tape that can be ironed on or stuck to the fabric. Turn the cushion cover right-side out and coax the rolled cushion through the opening. This may require two people.

Flatten the cushion out so it fits snugly and smoothly inside of the slipcover. Press the hook-and-loop tapes together and replace the cushion in its chair.
