A quality mattress can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years if properly maintained, and a well-built bed frame can last decades. Because your bed is a functional and expensive part of your everyday life, it is the perfect candidate for storage. Maybe your partner is moving in, and you need to upgrade from a twin to queen, or your kids are moving out, and you want to repurpose their rooms. Whatever the case — follow these basic mattress storage tips to make sure your bedroom set stays in great shape for years to come. Steps to Storing a Mattress and Bed Frame ✓ Consider climate control. A primary concern when keeping any furniture in storage is moisture and temperature changes.
These mischief-makers can do significant damage to your bed and mattress. Consider upgrading from a traditional self storage unit to climate-controlled storage. This will ensure that your storage space will have heat in the winter and stay cool in the summer, safeguarding your expensive mattress and bed from severe temperature changes. If you do go with a traditional storage unit, buy a portable dehumidifier. Though not as ideal, this tool will pump moisture out whenever you visit and help maintain the quality of your mattress. ✓ Clean everything first. Once you’ve selected the right space, clean your bed and mattress — and all furniture pieces — before putting them into storage. You can clean your mattress many different ways, but the easiest method is vacuuming your mattress on both sides and then using upholstery cleaner (like the kind you use on a couch). Clean the bed and bed frame with soap and water. If desired, use oil soap on the wooden bed or headboard, especially if it’s an antique or older piece.
✓ Disassemble the bed. Take apart the bed before bringing it to your self storage unit. Not only will it pack easier, but it’ll also reduce the likelihood of nicks or scratches. ✓ Protect from dust or moisture. Cover the bed pieces with old blankets or sheets to shield them from dust or moisture. If possible, do not use thick plastic covers, as these are more likely to trap in the moisture. Light, breathable plastic would work well, however. Similarly, the mattress needs to stay covered. High-quality mattress bags (with no holes or tears) should cost less than $20. These will prevent mold and ensure the mattress stays dry. ✓ Lay the mattress flat (and NOT on its side). While some sources may tell you to prop the mattress on its side to save space, you should never store a mattress upright for a long period of time. It’s perfectly fine to carry your mattress upright, but once you place it inside your storage unit, lay it flat to mimic its natural positioning.
Over time, the coils and inter-workings of a side-stored mattress will settle out of their proper position, destroying the cushion. Never store anything on top of the mattress. Heavy objects can damage the springs. Heavy objects create more wear. To make the best use of space, place the mattress on top of other objects, like pallets or other flat-topped furniture items. Make sure everything is stable, though! When moving your mattress from point A to point B, remember to always use a moving truck. It is not only unsafe to tie a mattress to the top of your car, the mattress could also bend to the point of no return in the process. If you’re worried about accommodating someone significantly heavier than that but still want the power of Purple, please be assured that all users, regardless of weight, should find comfort benefits with the Purple® Bed.
Please be advised that, while with the use of significantly heavier users will not void the warranty, it may cause the bed to soften more quickly than with an average-weighted user and therefore may eventually alter the Purple™ Bed’s comfort providing abilities. For the mattress cover, we recommend using a stretchy mattress protector and spot-cleaning with upholstery when it does get dirty. **The cover does zip off, but we recommend not putting it through your washing machine unless absolutely necessary. If you do, use a completely cold cycle and hang or lay flat to dry only (there is a LOT of spandex in it, so if you put it in the washer/dryer, it will shrink and that could potentially interfere with the benefits of Purple™). Why do I need stretchy sheets for my Purple® mattress? The stretchier your sheets and mattress protector, the more you’ll be able to enjoy the full benefits of Purple. Too tight and/or non-stretchy fabrics can act as a barrier between you and the Purple so you don’t get as much pressure release as you could. What is the quality of the foam? Does the Purple® Bed need a boxspring? Of course we recommend our platform base! However, the Purple just needs a sturdy surface to sit on, whether that’s a platform, slats (3″ apart or less), box foundation, an adjustable bed frame, or even the floor — it all works just fine. Make sure your mattress won’t be on a sagging frame or foundation and you’re good to go! What type of flame retardant is in the mattress? We use a fabric knit barrier that meets all of the industry standards for your safety without filling your mattress with toxic chemicals. Does it emit off-gassing? There may be a faint “new mattress” smell right when it comes out of the packaging, which the few who have noticed it have described as nutty and sweet. If it is noticeable, it will fade within a few days and is not toxic (most toxic off-gassing that is associated with mattresses comes from memory foam, which we do not use). Do I have to rotate my Purple® mattress? We don’t have an official policy. Not required, but recommended every 6 months or so. The Purple® Mattress also shouldn’t be flipped or you could lose its benefits! You can rotate the mattress, although it’s not necessary! How do I unpack my Purple® mattress? There will be a great little Purple slicer – that looks suspiciously like a letter opener – included in the package. Use that to cut down the length of the plastic tube, (Yes, it will cut between the teeth of the zipper and through the fabric and plastic) and unroll the mattress from the several layers of purple fabric holding it together. Your bed will be ready to sleep on right away. How firm is the Purple® mattress? Most of our customers rate our mattress a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, but it really just is personal preference! Is the Purple® mattress vegan?
