The Simmons Beautyrest Glover Park Pillowtop from Sears was rated No. 1 among innerspring beds, slightly ahead of a Serta Perfect Sleeper Elite Pastel Firm Pillowtop from Macy's. Both of those beds earned "CR Best Buy" status for blending performance and value, the testing group said. No. 3 on the innerspring list, and also earning "recommended" status, was a Stearns & Foster Lois Luxury Firm from Sears. Rounding out the innerspring ratings were a Simmons Beautyrest TruEnergy Bryanna, at No. 4;
the Ikea Sultan Holmsta, No. 5; and the Sealy Posturepedic Cloveridge LT Firm at Macy's, in the No. 6 and last position. The innerspring scores ranged from a high of 69 for the Simmons bed to a low of 57 for the Sealy Posturepedic. The overall scores mainly reflect side and back support, durability and stability, Consumer Reports said. The No. 1 rated bed on the memory foam list was a Tempur-Pedic Tempur Simplicity bed, which earned a "recommended" commendation. The Novaform Memory Foam Collection Serafina, from Costco, was in the No. 2 position and earned the "CR Best Buy" commendation. No. 3 on that list was the Sealy Embody Insightful, with a "recommended" commendation. No. 4 on the memory foam list was the Serta iComfort Sleep System Genius, from Macy's, while No. 5 was the Sealy Posturepedic Optimum Inspiration. No. 6, and last, was the Simmons ComforPedic Loft Crestwood Luxury Plush.The memory foam scores ranged from a high of 62 for the Tempur- Pedic bed to a low of 55 for the ComforPedic bed.
Consumer Reports said it "enlisted men, women and machines" to see which mattresses performed best, whether consumers sleep mostly on their back or side. "Weeks of pushing and pounding with an arsenal of gadgets and weights showed that the same mattress can be much less supportive depending on how you sleep," the magazine article said. "One innerspring mattress from Sealy might keep you up if your sleep partner tosses and turns all night. And three memory-foam models could make changing positions a challenge." The magazine also noted that sleepers "don't have to pay an arm and a leg for the back and side support" that can help them get a good night's sleep. Three of its recommended mattresses cost well under $1,000, it noted, while "a high-priced Simmons model scored lowest overall." Among other conclusions offered by Consumer Reports:► Some beds are better for back sleepers. Serta's innerspring Perfect Sleeper Elite Pastel Firm Pillowtop "offers the most support if you sleep on your back."
