Learn how to store your mattress — proper mattress storage will ensure your investment in a comfy bed is rewarded for years to come. Updated on 2/19/16 from an article originally published on 3/31/14. Mattresses and bed frames are an investment, both in cost and in the time it takes to find the right one. A quality mattress can last anywhere from 10 to 15 years if properly maintained, and a well-built bed frame can last decades. Because your bed is a functional and expensive part of your everyday life, it is the perfect candidate for storage. Maybe your partner is moving in, and you need to upgrade from a twin to queen, or your kids are moving out, and you want to repurpose their rooms. Whatever the case — follow these basic mattress storage tips to make sure your bedroom set stays in great shape for years to come. Steps to Storing a Mattress and Bed Frame ✓ Consider climate control. A primary concern when keeping any furniture in storage is moisture and temperature changes.

These mischief-makers can do significant damage to your bed and mattress. Consider upgrading from a traditional self storage unit to climate-controlled storage. This will ensure that your storage space will have heat in the winter and stay cool in the summer, safeguarding your expensive mattress and bed from severe temperature changes. If you do go with a traditional storage unit, buy a portable dehumidifier. Though not as ideal, this tool will pump moisture out whenever you visit and help maintain the quality of your mattress. ✓ Clean everything first. Once you’ve selected the right space, clean your bed and mattress — and all furniture pieces — before putting them into storage. You can clean your mattress many different ways, but the easiest method is vacuuming your mattress on both sides and then using upholstery cleaner (like the kind you use on a couch). Clean the bed and bed frame with soap and water. If desired, use oil soap on the wooden bed or headboard, especially if it’s an antique or older piece.

✓ Disassemble the bed. Take apart the bed before bringing it to your self storage unit. Not only will it pack easier, but it’ll also reduce the likelihood of nicks or scratches. ✓ Protect from dust or moisture. Cover the bed pieces with old blankets or sheets to shield them from dust or moisture. If possible, do not use thick plastic covers, as these are more likely to trap in the moisture. Light, breathable plastic would work well, however. Similarly, the mattress needs to stay covered. High-quality mattress bags (with no holes or tears) should cost less than $20. These will prevent mold and ensure the mattress stays dry. ✓ Lay the mattress flat (and NOT on its side). While some sources may tell you to prop the mattress on its side to save space, you should never store a mattress upright for a long period of time. It’s perfectly fine to carry your mattress upright, but once you place it inside your storage unit, lay it flat to mimic its natural positioning.

Over time, the coils and inter-workings of a side-stored mattress will settle out of their proper position, destroying the cushion. Never store anything on top of the mattress. Heavy objects can damage the springs. Heavy objects create more wear. To make the best use of space, place the mattress on top of other objects, like pallets or other flat-topped furniture items. Make sure everything is stable, though! When moving your mattress from point A to point B, remember to always use a moving truck. It is not only unsafe to tie a mattress to the top of your car,  the mattress could also bend to the point of no return in the process. Following these tips will protect your mattress and bed for months and years to come. Brooklyn Bedding has been in the mattress industry a long time, though they’re now coming out with a completely new mattress. They call it the #bestmattressever (yes, the hashtag is part of the name), and since it gets very strong ratings from other sites, I was very interested to see the feel and comfort of this new latex mattress (see how it compares to other brands HERE).  Overall I had a good experience with the mattress, but there’s some particular things to note about the mattress you should know before making a purchase. Check out the video below for my thoughts on the mattress. You will love Brooklyn Bedding if: You are a fan of latex – the latex foam mattress feel is very distinct, and though less popular than memory foam, is actually considered by many to be the best sleeping surface. You like a mattress designed by some of the best in the industry – many of the new popular mattress companies have products designed by people new to the industry (so quality varies).

There’s no doubt with Brooklyn Bedding that the designers and manufacturers are mattress experts and knew very well how to make a quality product. You are looking for great value – Brooklyn Bedding not only ships from the factory to your doorstep, they also own the factory.  Thus they are able to offer as good or better a deal on their own product than competing options. You do not like sleeping hot – a big concern for many looking at foam mattresses.  The bed didn’t sleep hot at all for me.  Not sleeping hot is one of the reasons that many prefer latex over memory foam. You want a mattress great for sex – latex is known to have some spring, and this mattress is a good option.  It narrowly missed our best mattresses for sex list. You prefer a reviewed mattress – many of the new online-only companies don’t have many reviews – Brooklyn Bedding does, both for the company and this product.  Reading some of these can definitely provide some peace of mind.

Get Up To $45 Off Brooklyn Bedding You will not like Brooklyn Bedding if: You’re a spring or memory foam person – personally I really like latex, but if you are die-hard memory foam or spring, go with your passion.  This mattress won’t magically change your preference (though a few friends not familiar with latex have become converts after testing this one out). You want all the luxury bells and whistles – I consider the mattress quality to put it in the luxury category, but if you want to spend more, you can get more specialty features with other products. You want to try the mattress out before purchase – no can do, sold only online.  They do offer a 120 night full return policy, so you won’t be stuck with the mattress if you end up not liking it. Comfort, Support, and Firmness I found the mattress to be comfortable, though keep in mind I do like latex.  The mattress has some serious bounce, so beware for someone looking for a traditional memory foam feel.

The support I thought was actually the standout part of the mattress, with my pressure points alleviated very well.  I tried sleeping on my side, back, and stomach, with all feeling better than the average mattress. Brooklyn Bedding has 3 firmness levels, so you have the freedom to choose your firmness.  I had the medium firmness option, which I’d put at about a 6.5 out of 10 firmness. Return Policy and Special Notes The return policy follows the standard online-only mattress model, where you can return the mattress within a period of time (120 days for Brooklyn Bedding) and get a full refund.  This is actually the best way to test out a mattress, in that you won’t really know what it’s like to sleep on a mattress after laying on it for 5 minutes in the store. A unique note about Brooklyn Bedding is that they actually own their factory where they manufacture this mattress (made in USA).  They have been in the mattress game a long time, and thus are both design and manufacturing experts when it comes to mattress.

Because of this, I think they have one of the better quality products on the market at this price point, even compared to the other online-only mattress companies (which also deliver huge value over the traditional mattress store model). Brooklyn Bedding is very transparent about their manufacturing, so I think actually the best source of information on their specs is their own website.  However for quick summary, the mattress consists of: 2 inches of Talalay latex 2 inches of Dunlop latex 6 inches of high density polyfoam The cover is a quilted cotton polyester blend.  It is quilted with 3/4 inch tick of polyfoam, giving it a somewhat plush feel on top.  Overall the mattress is made to have great bounce and sleep very cool. If you like the latex feel, Brooklyn Bedding should be one of your top choices.  I found it really comfortable, and very well priced, especially knowing it comes from an established mattress company with manufacturing expertise (see our other reviews).
