In the Hints Box of an old edition of Arthritis Today, a reader suggested that arthritis sufferers would feel more comfortable in bed with a mattress topper. I wonder where one could be purchased? I have not seen any in the shops and am reluctant to purchase from catalogues. I have recently bought a memory foam bed and it is not at all comfortable. It would be lovely to get some recommendations from other readers. Eileen Duke, Hillsborough, County Down I have had arthritis for years and have had both hips replaced in the past three years. Over the Christmas period I slept in a bed with a mattress topper. I didn’t know why it was so different, and why my body had stopped hurting in its usual manner each morning.

I was told that the bed had a mattress topper on the bed. I came home and ordered one exactly the same – which is now on my bed with equal success. I was amazed at the difference it made in my life. I have never written to a magazine before but felt I must tell your enquirer how to purchase this wonderful item. My mattress topper came from the White Company (0845 678 8150) – it is duck feather and down and for king size the cost was about £90. I recently bought a goose down/feather mattress topper from Keys of Clacton (01255 830500) and this has proved very comfortable for my husband who has osteoarthritis of the spine. He uses it on top of a Tempur mattress and he says that it has greatly helped the pain and discomfort. Mrs H Smith, Blandford Forum, Devon I have dealt with the House of Bath catalogue (0871 984 2000) for many years, and have always found them very satisfactory. We bought a mattress topper from them many years ago and it is still giving good service.

Margaret Bacon, Sidcup, Kent A local family department store sells single duvets for about £6 in their sales. I buy a single one as it is just the right size to fit on top of a double bed. I sleep with this under my sheet and find it a great help. After a time it becomes rather flat so a good blow on the line helps to fluff it up a bit, but after a few years I replace it for another, which is cheaper than having it service-washed. I re-use the filling of the old one by stuffing cushion covers for smaller supports in chairs. I too tried manufactured toppers and pillows but I find this is the most comfortable way for me, and certainly much cheaper. I get numb hands with pins & needles if I lay slightly on either side, middle & lower back ache the longer I stay in bed.

I can't do a lay in. Headaches from my neck and in the last year or so, very poor circulation in my legs. The side effect being mostly 1 but sometimes 2, freezing feet, despite having being tucked up and nice & warm everywhere else!I found it more comfortable to sleep sat up, so I bought a wedge pillow BED WEDGE WITH WASHABLE,QUILTED POLY COTTON COVERto add to my other 4 feather pillows (tried the ortho neck pillow) and the 5th to soften to hard feel of the wedge! If I managed to not move all night, I wouldn't get so much lower & middle back pain.My old mattress is a pocket sprung orthopaedic good quality mattress costing £500 11 yrs. ago. I hated the damn thing and never found it relived my pain. Over the last couple of years especially, going to bed was a necessary evil to be endured! Was it the mattress or just my back? Very Happy with this mattress. the worst mattress i have ever slept on,it, sagged into the middle, the foam was too flimsy, gave me bad backache & after 14 months it has started falling apart. Lasted a year, has now gone really soft and is causing backaches but was good until then. At 85kg expect around 11-12 months before you need a new one This mattress will bring you closer in bed, because you both end up in a hole in the middle.Don't worry you will never fall out, as its all uphill . Super comfortable, great nights sleep, will always have memory foam now!...I had slept on one at my friends for a tune so I knew what I was getting. This mattress is quite firm and comes all rolled up. It's a little soft A lot more "bounce" than my other memory foam mattress. It is also a lot lighter too. I would say this is a good product but only worth it at the £200 - £250 discounted... See and discover other items: mattress cover Look for similar items by category
