Everyone knows it’s acceptable for us grown-ups to get stuck into some Lego. It's the reason your parents bought it for you as a child and it's also the reason you'll buy it for your own offspring. With increasingly sophisticated models and the kind of geek-tastic products that have adult men salivating in toy shop windows (see just about every bit of Star Wars kit ever produced), Lego has come to combine two of the greatest pleasures known to man – taking on a project and wallowing in nostalgia. With this in mind, we’ve enlisted the help of top AFOL (adult fan of Lego) and editor of Bricks magazine, Mark Guest, to run down some of greatest sets known to mankind. Some will test the limits of your construction skills, others will simply appeal to your inner nerd – all are worthy of serious man-points. Time to start bricking it.
We’re just a few months away from one of the biggest superhero movies of 2016, and somehow, we still haven’t seen too many toys and collectibles for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. We’ve seen a few figures here and there, but for the most part, all the collectibles and toys coming from the upcoming film have been largely kept under wraps. For some reason though, DC and Warner Brothers thought this week would be a good week to start letting some of those collectibles out in the wild. I mean, it’s not like there’s anything else happening in the geek world now, so why not sneak a few toys out to see if anyone notices? Thanks to the paragon of comic book and nerd lifestyles, The Wall Street Journal, we have an idea of what Lego‘s plans for BVS:DOJ now look like. The paper unveiled three new building block sets, all of which will be available beginning on January 1, 2016. That’s like two weeks away. Nothing like surprising audiences with new toys just days after the holidays and with little notice.
The Sky-High Battle set (516 pieces) brings most of the cast together, along with the Batplane and a LexCorp helicopter. Lois Lane and Lex Luthor accompany Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman in this package, which isn’t a bad set for $50. This will be the only way to get Wonder Woman until more sets arrive in time with the film this spring, but at least she makes the cut in one of these opening salvos. The Kryptonite Interception set (300 pieces, $30) pits the Batmobile against a forklift in what has to be one of the most one-sided battles in all of human history. Sure the LexCorp goons have some guns and Kryptonite, but that green stuff doesn’t do much to Batman. Also, I’m pretty sure the only thing on Earth with the stopping power to put a dent in the Batmobile rhymes with Gooperhan. Finally there’s the Clash of Heroes set (90 pieces, $13) that lets the two marquee names duke it out around the Bat-signal. Unlike the other sets, the Batman included here is armored up for the occasion and comes with a Kryptonite bazooka.
In my humble opinion, that gun he’s holding looks much more like a Kryptonite pistol, but who am I to argue with Lego? The Bat-signal supposedly explodes, too, which would be great if you wanted to break the thing you just spend 30 minutes building over and over again. More sets should hopefully be on display at Toy Fair in February. We should learn a lot more about Warner’s and DC’s Batman V Superman toy plans there, too.
