Berlin

Berlin is a cosmopolitan city full of alternative boutiques, innovative art, rich history and vibrant night life. It is the nation's capital and busiest city.

Berlin is located in the northeastern corner of Germany on the banks of the river Spree. On the South Bank, along the Strasse des 17 Juni, monuments like the Berlin Zoo, Tiergarten, Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, and Schloss Bellevue draw tourists.

Berlin is known as the place where the Nazi regime came to an end and where Hitler killed himself in the Hitler Bunker, which still exists under a parking lot in the heart of the city.

But it's also known for:

It's Vibrant streets; It’s hard to find a corner of Berlin that isn’t singing with street art, particularly in trendy neighbourhoods, Kreuzberg and Neukölln. The vibrant city streets reflect the artistic energy humming in the air.

Strong musical roots; Berlin is an epicentre for musical exploration and has embodied a kind of sanctuary for artists over the years, including the likes of Bowie and Iggy Pop. This has led to the city being captured and remembered through music, creating a sort of soundtrack for Berlin.

Diverse foodie scene; Berlin’s multicultural society has integrated itself nicely into the foodie scene. The effect is a diverse, delicious gastronomy landscape, rich in street food markets, unique restaurants and signature dishes.

Berlin wall; was a guarded concrete barrier that physically and ideologically divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. Its demolition officially began on 13 June 1990 and finished in 1992.

Diversity of people; after the wall has fallen, many people from East Berlin left their houses and moved to other parts of Germany. This combined with the turmoil after the failed communistic system there lead to many houses being abandoned. Consecutively, artists and anarchists inhabited them, which combined with the general disorder led to the realization of many creative ideas. This also gave the basis for a culture of welcoming, as many people were poor at that time, people accepted you no matter where you came from or what you looked like. A bit of this culture survived until today, e.g. there are clubs not letting you in when you wear logos in order to prevent identification based on wealth.
