New Homes in York, Pennsylvania If you're considering making a move to Pennsylvania, here's one of the strongest endorsements you'll ever hear for a town: for three centuries people have made their home here.

One of the most well-preserved historic cities on the Eastern Seaboard, York was the capital of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War, the legislative body that got us through our war of independence with the British and adopted the Declaration of Independence. It was also one of the young United States' most prosperous towns in the early 1800s, and played a role in the Civil War that same century. As you can imagine, history is never more than a stone's throw away in this town. As a resident in a beautiful new home, you'll be ideally poised to take advantage of both old and new in York. The only question is, with so much history, where do you start? The York County Heritage Trust has an easy answer to that, since it manages a small fleet of museums that can open up York's past for you. Everyone has a different site or museum that speaks to them, so take your time and plan to spend a weekend, or a season, or even a whole year discovering what's here. We can highlight a few local museums to get you started.

The Fire Museum, located in an antique firehouse, will please kids. The main museum, the Historical Society Museum, covers three centuries of history in two floors, giving visitors a sense of York's total experience, from the Revolutionary War, when it hosted the Continental Congress, to the Civil War, when it was occupied by Confederate forces, to today. A well-preserved colonial village (the "Colonial Complex"), also under the umbrella of the York County Heritage Trust, brings it all to life. From the main museum of the York County Heritage Trust, it's a short walk to downtown and the famous York Central Market. The market is the reason you'll notice a slight bustle to the streets on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, as residents and visitors alike splurge on fresh produce, sandwiches, coffee, and other local delicacies drawn from the largely Amish countryside around York. For a few years it seemed like the market would go by the wayside of history. Not so fast: like the rest of this old city, the Market has serious staying power.

You may not be able to resist its weekly (or biweekly, or-- eek-- tri-weekly) call. York is not all about history and farmers' markets. It also has a thriving sports and outdoors culture. A short drive will bring you to the Allegheny Mountains and the Pennsylvania farm country, where you can hike, bike, or simply admire the scenery for free. An even shorter drive can bring you up close and personal with an American classic, the Harley Davidson Motor Company. York is one of Harley-Davidson's "home bases," so you can count on an informative, exhilarating factory tour. The USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame is also located in York. It offers a worldwide view of an ancient sport, then describes how it took root in the US. For a summer day out with the family, look no further than the York Revolution Minor League Team, which plays at the Sovereign Bank Stadium in York. Whether you love the scenery, the museums and historical sites, or just the hometown feel, York is right for you and your family.
