With five months left until commercial solariums are completely banned in Queensland, the Cancer Council is now urging all state and territory governments to ban home solariums too.

Cancer Council Queensland spokeswoman Katie Clift said it was concerning the message about the dangerous of solariums was not being heard."We've urged the State Government to ban private possession and use but we need clear and consistent action," she said."Sun bed use can be lethal in fact we know that half of all Australian adolescents across the country still believe that it's safe to use a sun bed."We need in the interest of public health to urgently look at banning private possession and use." Video: Call to ban home solariums in Qld Brisbane restaurant owner John Theoharis said the upcoming ban on commercial solariums in the bordering states would create an underground market. He purchased a home solarium several years ago to save time and money. He said the ban on businesses would not stop people using home solariums. "Sun bed use can be lethal. In fact we know that half of all Australian adolescents across the country still believe that it's safe to use a sun bed."

"With all the bans and all the scares I think that people are using tanning beds regardless," he said."I believe that there will be an underground market for beds and if people can buy them online and can have them at home, there's no regulation, there's no supervisions, so it could lead to more drama than what it is at the moment."Mr Theoharis argued people were better off going to a regulated salon than having one at home."A lot of people abuse it like that and that's why it should be left as a business rather than just being out in the open for people to get their hands on," he said.It is legal in Queensland to have a home solarium for private use, but not to charge others to use it.Mr Theoharis said he had let friends use his bed before, but had never accepted money."I've probably let a couple of people, people that I've lived with that have been to tanning salons before, but I reject a lot of people purely for the fact that I don't want the liability," he said."People have offered me money in the past and I've rejected them.

To people I think it's convenience, if somebody's friend has one at home then why go to a salon, you know, 'mate I'll give you $20 and let's have a tan'."Unsupervised it's a bit dangerous."While there are no national figures tracking the number of home solariums, one of the few remaining suppliers said he had seen a surge in sales.Colin Cefai from At Home Solariums said he believed people were panic buying ahead of the impending commercial ban."Come December 31 this year solariums will be banned in Queensland and New South Wales so I think we are getting a lot of enquiries through that," Mr Cefai said."I've been in the industry for about 11 or 12 years and I've never seen a spike in inquiries and sales like this. "I've been in the industry for about 11 or 12 years and I've never seen a spike in inquiries and sales like this." "We are getting a lot more calls than normal because people feel like they're running out of time. Over the last six months in inquiries we've probably had maybe a 25 to 30 per cent increase."
