Sleep... it's one of the things that we just can't seem to get enough of these days. However, a company called Technogel wants you to fall asleep the moment you lay down. The Technogel Vive mattress is, simply put, the most comfortable bed we have ever touched. It's hard to put into words how soft yet supportive it is. Technogel is all the best sleeping technologies in one luscious mattress: foam, latex, and gel. This glorious trifecta is the best thing in layering since the invention of the tres leches cake. What makes the Vive so special? The foam, latex, and gel combo conforms to your body and has high thermal conductivity. Basically, it feels like you're floating. The mattress follows the contours of your body to keep pressure points from forming, while high thermal conductivity prevents the surface from heating up. The end result is a bed that's not too hard, not too soft, not too hot, and not too cold. The price is pretty steep: $8,000 for the highest-end and most comfortable model.

That price point puts it about on par with the Sleep Number X12. The X12 is designed with a smart technology that monitors your sleep patterns. Having lain on both, we'd rather pay for a more comfortable bed than a more technologically advanced one. The Technogel bed probably costs more than all the beds in your house combined, but study after study has shown that Americans aren't getting enough sleep. The fact is, shuteye is essential for your health, and a good mattress is a good start. Our editors review and recommend products to help you buy the stuff you need. The Four Seasons Bed mattresses feature GelTouch Foam Center heat-absorption technology that keeps you cool and comfortable throughout the night. As well, the bed has pocketed coil motion separation that minimizes disturbance when you or your partner moves around.

Additionally, you can choose from three different mattress tops that vary in levels of firmness: Signature, Signature Firm, or Signature Plush. The beds are currently being rolled out across hotels in the U.S.A., but you can have a sublimely comfortable sleep in your own home by buying your own. These beds are never sold in stores so you need to purchase from a hotel directly. A set (including mattress, box spring and topper) starts at $2,199 for a twin. 2.  Westin Heavenly Bed The aptly named Westin Heavenly Bed is renowned among jetsetters for its ability to create a divine, restful sleep anywhere in the world. The plush pillow-top mattress eases you into a deep sleep, while pocketed coils minimize movement and disturbance from bedmates. The Heavenly Bed is widely available, on sale at Nordstrom and Pottery Barn, as well as through Westin’s own website. Prices start at $1,368 for a twin mattress with box spring and bed frame. To really create the heavenly experience, and fresh scent, of a Westin bedroom, we recommend adding a signature White Tea candle ($36) to your shopping cart.

The French luxury hotel chain has 120 hotels in 40 countries across the world, but if you can’t spend every night in a Sofitel hotel, you can, at least, rest in a signature Sofitel SoBed. Custom designed for the hotel chain, the soft SoBed’s innerspring ensures support and diminishes movement. You will, Sofitel confidently claims, “awake each day with a natural joie de vivre.” While we can’t quite guarantee your morning mood, we do concur this is a stellar bed. A twin set with mattress, box spring, and bed frame starts at $1,524. 4.  W Hotels Bed If you want the W Hotel bed experience without the over-the-top scene-y W Hotel experience, you’ll just have to buy your own. Created by Simmons especially for W Hotels, you can choose from a plush top mattress with firm support that creates a solid foundation eliminating tossing and turning, or a softer pillow top mattress, which, W Hotels claim, “some guests describe as sleeping on a cloud.” Price starts at $1,399 for a twin including box spring and frame, or $2,776 for a queen set that comes with sheets, duvet, and four pillows.

Truly the king of hotel beds, the Duxiana brand even has entire hotels in Sweden and China built around its luxe beds. A DUX bed is a sure sign of a great hotel and luxury hotels that can lay claim to this amenity include Burj Al Arab Jumeirah in Dubai and The Quin in New York City. The beds, which are engineered to alleviate back pain and promote good sleeping posture, feature the Pascal system of interchangeable spring cassettes, allowing you to customize your side of the bed. The company even claims that sleeping in their beds gives you an additional hour of deep sleep. Duxiana stores are located throughout the U.S. and prices for a DUX bed range from $3,700 to $12,000. Since October, we've been sleeping on the very last bed of our entire Year in Bed experiment — a Kluft Royal Sovereign. Sold nearly exclusively by Bloomingdale's in (where you can see more. For lower store pricing, visit or call 800-232-1854), it arrived with a super polite, white glove delivery service and represented our only test of an American made, high end, traditional bed. This is a great traditional bed, but for the price, it should be. I was super pleased to sleep on a Kluft bed, since I knew of the name from touring the Bloomingdale's mattress showroom. A third generation mattress manufacturer, Earl Kluft is a lifelong Californian and maker of high end American mattresses using a complicated combination of foam layers, wrapped coil springs and a special "fill chamber design" that has resulted in a bunch of patents for bed design. This may all be a bit "over the top" but it does end up in a nice bed. This bed takes 3rd place overall. There is no doubt that this is a plush, supportive bed.

It's thick to begin with and has a boxspring, which means that is has a deeper give than most beds, and you can feel the firm, well sprung topper lifting you along your whole body, while letting you sink in luxuriously. This is a wedding cake of a bed but it does a great job of getting you a great night's sleep. A lot of work gets put into this mid-range Kluft from the talalay latex (eco) to the individually wrapped coils (which all the best beds rely on to some extent) and the many layers of foam that make up this bed. While I don't give it high marks for being green or eco-friendly (which I find important in the mattress world in 2011), or for using a lot of body friendly and luxurious natural materials, there was no hint of offgassing and the finish of the bed was top notch. At over $5,000, this bed is right in between the 1-2k and the 10k beds we tested. While I'd far rather go with a Savoir or a Hastens on the high end, I would say that this bed IS a more comfortable sleep than the 1-2k beds, but not four to five times more comfortable.
