I have been trying to find a cheap, simple accomodation in or near Peterborough, Ontario. There seems to be a youth hostel but I am not sure because I cannot find it on the web. All I need is a bed and I don't need any flashy views or expensive interiors, TV etc. Just a bed under a roof. Hmmm, I too did a GOOGLE Search and got 2 hits for Hostels... neither of which panned out with very clear info: Severn Court Summer Hostel = 555 Wilfred Drive - (705) 740-1150 Peterborough Youth Hostel = RR # 8 – Peterborough - (705) 742-9449 I suppose you could always contact them. It might be helpful to know what time of year you will be visiting... Peterborough is also home to Trent University and they may offer overnight stays in their Residence Dorms during the summertime. Not sure though, most Canadian Universities do this, but I can't find anything specific to Trent = www.trentu.ca/housing you could try to contact them at housing@trentu.ca for more info. Other than that... guess we'll have to see if a "local" comes by this FORUM Topic with more info on what other cheap alternatives might be available to you.

I'm going the last days of this month so the first hostel you mentioned will be closed. I will try to call the other one tomorrow. They do not seem to have an email address. The next step seems to be expensive B&Bs. I definitely do not need their queen beds or breakfasts. Is there nothing in between these categories of accomodation? After some more browsing I have found one B&B with positive reviews at $75 per night (breakfast excluded). But I also found a cottage with all facilities at $30 at the Indian River Camp which suits me perfectly. So I went from $130 per night at the Holiday Inn to $30 which must be considered a good investment of time searching the web. Please do us a BIG favour and come back to the FORUM after your visit to Peterborough and let us know how it went with a TripReport. Peterborough is mostly a cottage area (and is on the Trent Severn Canal) so a lot of summer travellers... wintertime it is a College town (Trent University). Also currently there is no DE for the region (the Kawarthas) and I am the "closest" neighbour (Canada's Capital Region) so I have been helping out with the Questions that come up on the FORUM, but I don't live in the region, and probably only visit the area once a year.... so any info you can come back and post on the FORUM will be helpful to others (including myself).

It would be much appreciated. I am back from my adventure in Peterborough. I chose the Indian River Hideaway which is a camp site about 12 minutes from downtown. Just follow Lansdowne St, East and seconds after passing the Indian River itself (green sign to the right) it's to the left. I stayed in one of the cottages which was fully equipped with heaters, bathroom, TV, small bedroom, fridge, gas stove/oven. It was very neat and rustique and not standardized in any way and the cottage itself looked like the one in Snow White and the seven Dwarves. The floor and walls were skew and a marble would have reached the other side at full speed if I had put it on one side of the floor. There was also some kind of animal inside the walls that woke me up at night. Can't have been a rat or a mouse because it was really clumsy and tapping its feet quite heavily as it moved around. When I tried to scare it it moved in the other direction but not faster. Still wondering what that was.

I paid $30 per night. The cons were: no warm water in the shower, at least I couldn't manage to bring any out. And the lighter to the stove was out of gas and I didn't have time to get a new one. I didn't need the stove anyway. Very cosy and neat but quite low standard. On the other hand I think the price was unbeatable and it was exactly that combination I was looking for. Hi Wine-4-2, can't help the OP but I did stop at Rowland's on Hwy 7 for dinner on Sunday on the way back from Cottageland with a friend and had a pretty acceptable meal - that meaning it has a quaint and fun country feel (like I would expect in Minnesota or Winsconsin or ummm... Peterborough) but I have to day the food was well executed and the service absoulely fine and genuine, I'm not comparing to GTA fine dining but have to say it was good - I had a very good home made tomato soup, a great cut of rare Alberta prime rib, and while the wine choice was limited it was within expectations. 2 destinations mentioned in this post

Sorry just re-read that now I posted and I should clarify can't help the OP because it's too late (and oblique to the post)! But readers and Wine-4-2 maybe interested - lol. Thanks for the TripReport... much appreciated. Sounds like your adventure was really "rustic" but you were up for the challenge... and as you said it met all your criteria. I would be curious to know more about this spot... will keep it in mind incase someone is looking for a spot in the summertime... would imagine the experience would be quite a bit different in warmer weather. LOL at the "critter"... at this time of year, it is not uncommon for small animals to burrow in wherever they can... and sometimes something as small as a chipmunk or squirrel can sound HUGE from on the otherside of the wall. LOL, I got the intention of your post entirely... and I thank you for the info. I will check it out personally when I am in the vicinity next summer. Icanal still good for skating? Armour Hill for tobogganing?
