"It's not like they have a sharp edge. Everyone's had one and played with them."But innocent play can turn dangerous when children unzip the chairs' covers and climb inside. Five deaths and at least 14 other injuries have resulted when children have ingested and choked on the tiny foam pellets that fill the chairs.The July recall involves 142,000 chairs made by five manufacturers and sold since 1989 through small shops, catalogs and education supply companies. The CPSC has received no reports of injuries involving these chairs.Earlier recalls, in December and March, involved more than 12.5 million chairs sold at chains including Kmart, Target, Wal-Mart and Toys 'R' Us.The recalls have prompted manufacturers to make design changes. Mr. Bean Bag, the country's oldest bean bag chair manufacturer, started putting a reseal-able childproof zipper on chairs in February."
We've also sent out information to all our retailers telling them how to retrofit [older) bags," said Randy Edwards, a Mr. Bean Bag vice president.Other manufacturers are sending retailers materials to glue zippers into place, Premo said.Retailers, increasingly aware of safety problems with the chairs, also have become more cautious in what they stock.
