A toddler in Utah tragically suffocated under a bean bag chair last week after a day care worker sat on it. Leonardo Sanchez, who died at a nearby hospital, would have turned 2 just a few days from now. "Once we learned, I kept repeating back, 'Are you telling me a teacher sat on my kid?'" mother Danielle Sanchez told Time. Little Leonardo had crawled underneath the chair before the worker sat down to read to the other kids, unaware that the toddler was underneath. Leonardo Sanchez died just before his second birthday. Prosecutors will review the case after the investigation is complete to determine if any criminal charges are appropriate. "It just baffles me, makes me wonder, she must not have felt him, she must not have heard him," Danielle Sanchez told Fox 13. "My heart really hurts," father Dan Sanchez told Time. "How does somebody do that? I'm just trying to figure all of that out. It’s hard to understand. He’s about three feet tall. He’s not a tiny 2-year-old."

Leonardo Sanchez passed away at a hospital following the accident. The West Jordan Child Center said in a statement that "no words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel," according to Fox 13. "We do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family," read the statement. "We know the family well, we grieve with them, and we pray that God will provide them the comfort and peace they inevitably will need." The Utah Office of Children's Licensing said the facility has had two violations in the last five years, according to Fox 13. They are looking into what happened to Leonardo. Danielle Sanchez and her husband want to make sure nothing like this happens to another child. Leonardo's dad said he is not blaming the worker involved, and has forgiven her. "I’m pretty sure her heart sank down past the floor,” he told Time. "I'm not upset with her. I would hate for more tragedy to happen." The family is also making it their mission to keep the same thing from happening to another child.

"This can't be OK," Dan Sanchez told Time. "The realization of it is these specific kind of chairs that we’re calling beanbags are not safe." The tragedy took place at the West Jordan Child Center. Leonardo will be buried on Saturday, his birthday, according to Time. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the funeral. His heart was donated to another child, according to the magazine. The parents, who have three other children, told Time that Leonardo's toys are still spread around the home. "I still hear him,” Dan Sanchez told the magazine. “We're just trying to go one step at a time."
