Log InSubscribed, but don't have a login?Activate your digital access.Second bean bag store to open at Christiana MallThe bean bag fight is on at the Christiana Mall.Yogibo, a New Hampshire-based retailer of high-end bean bag furniture, announced plans to open its first Delaware store at the mall on Feb. 19."The Christiana Mall is a perfect fit for our brand and we are looking forward to fusing our style with their audience," founder and CEO Eyal Levy said in a release.
Yogibo, pronounced "Yogi-bo," will join fellow bean bag retailer Lovesac at Delaware's largest indoor mall.Lovesac, based in Connecticut, opened its first Delaware store at the mall in a 1,200-square-foot retail space in the strip between Target and Macy's in 2009.The new Yogibo store will open in a similar-sized space near the Disney Store in the strip between Target and JCPenney.While both retailers deal in comfy, stuffed furniture, not all bean bags are created the same, according to the chains."You might not think there are multiple segments of the bean bag business, but there are," said Yogibo spokesman Jason Knights. "We have a much different price point."DELAWAREONLINESix new stores coming to Christiana Mall this yearFounded in 2009, Yogibo is the newcomer to the market.The company offers "new age bean bag furniture" with an inner bag stuffed with a special grade of polysytrene surrounded by a washable, exterior bag made of a fire-retardant cotton-spandex blend available in vibrant colors.
Its flagship product, the $239 Yogibo Max, is a 6-foot-long, 2-foot-wide, lightweight bean bag that seats four, but also can be used as a recliner or bed. The Yogibo Max has been featured as a dorm room must-have by Student Advisor Magazine, Buzzfeed and other media outlets.The company also offers a wide range of bean bags for babies, children and even outdoor use, along with bedding, ottomans, rugs, dolls, stuffed animals and travel accessories."We don't view our products as furniture, but really elements of what we call the 'lifestyle of awesomeness,'" Levy said.Yogibo has 26 retail stores from Maine to Maryland. Its closest locations are currently the King of Prussia Mall in Pennsylvania and the Westfield Mall in Annapolis, Maryland.Both sites also have a Lovesac store.Lovesac got its start in Utah back in 1998 when founder Shawn Nelson turned his homemade design into a business.The company has about 60 mall-based stores in 27 states with plans to add a half-dozen or so each year.
Lovesac's flagship product is The Big One, a roughly 95-pound ball with an inner layer filled with Durafoam and a washable outer layer of polyester-based velvet, fake fur or polylinen in a range of patterns. The Big One retails for about $1,290.In addition to six sizes of Sacs, the company recently launched a line of so-called Sactionals that range in price from a $2,200 two-seater to an $8,700 modular couch with 10 seats.Lovesac company officials did not return messages seeking comment.Yogibo's Knights, however, said there's plenty of room for two bean bag stores at the Christiana Mall."We're not really direct competitors," said Yogibo's Knights.
