PRIMARY schools that banish traditional desks and chairs and remodel classrooms around beanbags and booths are reporting a dramatic lift in academic results.

Inspired by international education guru Stephen Heppell, the schools are leading an unlikely educational revolution aimed at producing a new generation of smart students from more innovative technology-connected classrooms.Gone are wooden desks and plastic chairs and in are cafe-style booths, soft lounges, bean bags, tents, inflatable little rooms, wave chairs and amphitheatres with tiered seating.Early adopters of the classroom redesign such as Quakers Hill Public in Sydney’s west report outstanding results with 60 per cent of its Year 6 students who sit for the selective schools exam gaining a place. This is redesigning education around children’s passion and engagement. We have looked at Professor Heppell’s research. It has been a huge focus. - Busby West deputy principal Donna Beath Such has been the g success of the classroom redesign that teachers have begun lobbying Education Minister Adrian Piccoli for greater flexibility in the way they teach.“Teachers tell me they want greater flexibility in delivering lessons and the way classrooms are designed has an impact on that,’’ Mr Piccoli said.

Teachers, parents and students across the state have been briefed by Professor Heppell, a global expert in learning spaces who claims students learn more effectively and behave better within “borderless learning” designs; when they have freedom to work in smaller groups and even learn standing up.It’s a method adopted by Busby West Public School in Sydney’s southwest, which has knocked down walls to form huge learning spaces for up to 100 children at a time, with multiple teachers.“We only started this year and we are getting great feedback from parents, teachers and students,” deputy principal Donna Beath said.“It has been a huge focus.”Busby West Public has thrown out its old-style desks and chairs and replaced them with soft furnishings and “pods” to accommodate smaller groups of students.Hilltop Road Public in Sydney’s West is another school basing changes on Professor Heppell’s ideas. It has ordered new furniture and is considering redesigned classrooms.“Professor Heppell has a global audience for how to cater for 21st century learning,” principal Natalie See said.

Quakers Hill Public principal Bert Lo Campo said gains made by the school had been “astronomical”.“The parent body is very supportive and is on the journey with us,” he said.“The department (of education) is working closely with Professor Heppell running approved courses.”media_cameraSanjay-Aryan Mair (front) sits on a bean bag while other students enjoy the tent. When 20 parents were expected at a technology workshop, 117 showed up.“It blows me away they were so committed to their children’s success,” she said.Another high-flying public school that has focused on technology, Seven Hills North, has been commended by The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority for making huge improvements in academic results.

Principal Kate Pugh said there was “a lot of interest” in the school since its results had been public. Among the secrets of success, she said, was using technology in the best possible ways and putting students in charge of their learning.Professor Heppell visited Sydney this week and lectured representatives from more than 30 school communities about 21st century classrooms and what will make learning better: “People focus on some of the zany stuff (such as shoeless classrooms) but you will find that the kids are working.“If you want to know the secret of discipline, then give kids tasks that are engaging and make them want to learn,” he said.“I have never seen a kid on holiday reading while sitting upright on a chair like those they had in schools.“The biggest thing in these (new classroom) spaces is that sound control is better with better surfaces, nooks, zones and quiet areas.”While supportive of greater flexibility in classroom design, NSW Primary Principals Association president Geoff Scott said teachers should not adopt a cookie-cutter approach to learning.“
