TGV Cinemas' Beanieplex: The World's Most Comfortable Movie Theater Posted April 19, 2012It looks like the Archipelago Cinema in Thailand (which floats entirely on water) may have some competition in the World's Coolest Movie Theater department. Earlier this year, TGV Cinemas, a theater chain in Malaysia, introduced the Beanieplex (a.k.a. "the bean bag hall"), which replaced your standard cinema seating with comfy beanbags. (You can check out photos of the theater in the gallery below.) According to the TGV website, "the revolutionary 'Beanieplex', Malaysia's first and only cinema hall featuring bean bag seats, offers patrons a cosy and relaxed viewing experience and has become a favorite among the movie-goers." Of course, there are downsides to having a movie theater full of beanbags. For instance, what happens when someone dumps soda, popcorn and candy all over the seat? Cleaning a beanbag seems way more difficult than cleaning your standard theater seat. Three TGV chains currently include the Beanieplex experience: the Sunway Pyramid, the 1st Avenue Mall and the AEON Tebrau City Shopping Centre.

The Projector revives two cinema halls and the 5th floor foyer of the historic Golden Theatre as an independent cinema and creative platform that brings together a great selection of films, one-of-a-kind events, versatile spaces and delectable fare. WATCH – Be spoilt for choice with specially curated programmes that showcase indie, foreign, cult favourites, classics, arthouse, horror, local flicks, retrospectives and special themed nights. A single screen classic cinema hall with 230 seats, the Green Room will be the main screening hall for films curated by The Projector. Besides being redesigned as a versatile events space, the Redrum (pronounced “red room”, inspired by Kubrick’s The Shining) will also be the home to screenings presented by Golden Bar.

EAT – At the foyer, the new Golden Bar serves popcorn, coffee and draft beer, and hybrid menu of – gasp – salted-egg yolk fries and kaya scones? The new carpark bar THE GREAT ESCAPE is now open and home to our crazy post-screening afterparties – dress up, show up and DRINK UP! OCCUPY – The Redrum has been redesigned into a more playful, flexible, casual lounge, events space & private screening room all in one. With a spacious stage, 180 seats including 30 beanbags, we’re always on the lookout for alternative mashups – a superhero costume singalong disco, a showcase of Wes Anderson fan art or a fashion catwalk with a live DJ! Golden Theatre was the biggest cinema in Singapore and Malaysia when it was completed in 1973 totaling over 1500 seats. Chong Gay Theatres Ltd built golden Theatre and Golden Mile Tower and the architect was Goh Hock Guan Design Team. Chong Gay Theatres Ltd also built the 2400-seater Kallang Cinema in 1978, the largest cinema in Southeast Asia when it was built, which was bought over by the government in the ‘80s as a new cultural venue called Kallang Theatre.

Golden Theatre, like many other cinemas built in that time, was originally one big movie theatre with stalls and circle seats. The space was subdivided into three separate halls in the 1990s. The Projector comprises two halls (Golden 1 and Golden 2) on the fifth floor that were once the circle seats of Golden Theatre. Golden Theatre was well patronised for its good quality Mandarin films in the ‘70s and ‘80s, ‘adult’ artistic films in the ‘90s and, more recently, Bollywood hits.
