The deaths of two children, one from McKinney, led to a recall of about 2.2 million bean bag chairs.The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Friday that the zippers on the chairs, which are made by Ace Bayou Corp., can open.Ian Welton, a 13-year-old McKinney boy, and a 3-year-old girl from Lexington, Ky., were found dead inside the chairs after they suffocated from a lack of air and from inhaling the chair’s foam beads.Rebecca Bisson, Ian’s mother, was pleased to hear about the recall effort. “It is so needed,” she said Friday.Her son died Oct. 2, 2011, about a month before his 14th birthday. He was a student at Frisco ISD’s Roach Middle School.Bisson said her son had the bean bag chair for years and sat in it while reading and playing video games in his bedroom.Why he crawled into the foam-filled chair remains a mystery.Bisson thinks he may have been playing hide-and-seek with his sister or was just curious to see what was inside.“It wasn’t like he wasn’t smart enough to know these things,” Bisson said.
“He was a super-intelligent person. He was at the top of his class.”The chairs were sold online and at Wal-Mart and other stores.
