Beachgoers can leave their sand chairs and umbrellas at home starting today. Lounges, chairs, umbrellas and even paddle and boogie boards will be rentable, with water and chips to buy from a vendor on three Boca beaches. It took Boca Raton until now to bring Oceanside Beach Service aboard. Delray Beach has offered beach rentals since 2002, according to the city.Oceanside also has contracts with Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Lake Worth and other locations further north. Boca's beaches were "the missing link," said Oceanside president Michael Novatka. "We're excited about being in Boca; a lot of our members have been using our Deerfield and Delray locations."Oceanside will now have sites at South Beach, Red Reef and Spanish River beaches from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 365 days a year, said J.D. Varney, recreation superintendent. "If there is inclement weather, they are authorized to shut down."The South Beach site is between lifeguard towers 2 and 4; Red Reef is between towers 7 at the south end midway to 8 and 9.

At Spanish River Park, which has three tunnels from the parking lot on the west side of A1A to the beach, the vendor has a site from the central to north tunnels or midway from towers 15 and 16 and tower 18."Their lounge chairs will have to be in that boundary, and a person can come out of the tunnel and go to a kiosk, much like you have at a resort," Varney said. All the furniture is new, he added, making sure beachgoers understand that rental is optional and people can still bring their own equipment. "It's designed to provide an amenity to those who wish to use them," Varney said. "That's why they're limited to where they can be. They're designed to be unobtrusive."Prices are: $10 a hour or $40 a day for a sand armchair with a foot rest, a strap lounge or double wooden lounge; a cabana/windbreaker top and cushion comes with the double lounger. A beach umbrella is $7 an hour or $20 a day. All the rental furniture will be blue and white and identified with the vendor's name, Varney added.

Water is $2 a bottle and assorted chips are $1. Snorkeling equipment is $15 an hour or $40 a day; boogie boards are $5 an hour or $15 a day and paddle boards $20 an hour or $60 a day.The city expects to generate revenue from the rentals and purchases. The contract calls for an initial one-year agreement. "For the first year, we're guaranteed $54,000, and if we re-up we're guaranteed $60,000, and the second renewal year $66,000 and the third year $72, 000," Varney said. "That money is guaranteed, and in the event their annual sales exceed $350,000, the city will receive 15 percent of any amount they received beyond the $350,000."The city also set aside $22,800 in the new budget for mats to allow beach accessibility for people using a wheelchair or who don't have firm footing. The mats have to be ordered, so the city's not sure how long it will take to get them in and install them, said Buddy Parks, deputy Recreation Services director. They also can't interfere with turtle season from March to October, when sea turtles dig nests on the beaches, he added."

We will put them on South Beach by the pavilion at the end of the ramp and at Spanish River on one of the beach accesses to be determined," he said. Red Reef is a narrower beach so that location hasn't been chosen, either, he said.At South Beach, the matting system will be set up from the pavilion out toward the ocean and along the high-tide mark in a T-shape. "So people can go along that one pathway and can sit along the shore," Parks said.
