Hilton Head Island Beaches Riding a Bike on the beach is one of the joys of bicycling on Hilton Head Island. When the tide is low the sand is hard packed and makes for easy pedaling. You can ride a bike from one end of the Hilton Head to the other and only once have to cross a tidal creek. We urge you NOT to ride your bike through wet sand or ocean water as the salt is very corrosive and will rapidly eat away the lubricants causing rust. There is a $25 cleaning fee if a bike comes back to us with evidence that it has been riden in the salt water. Every tenth of a mile there are location markers that can be used as a reference point should you need emergency assistance or to indicate to someone your position.
