I am debating on whether or not to bring our own chairs and an umbrella. Seems like the rental for a week is really expensive. Brought chairs and umbrella (and beach toys, rafts, cooler, etc.) down in a cart. If you don't mind the extra weight and packing it back and forth every day, then bringing your own definitely will save you some bucks. That being said, the first time we rented a place and the set-up was included, I really enjoyed the perk. Of course, I got the most joy out of it since I was the family pack mule. If you decide to purchase your own umbrella be sure to get the little device that you screw into the stand to put the umbrella in. Looks like a big cork screw. Worth the money and you'll use it year after year. And spend the money for a good, sturdy, WIDE umbrella. Again, you'll use it year after year if you're a frequent visitor to the beach. Then again, the umbrellas they set up for you on the beach are really wide and easy to get 2 adults under with plenty of shade to go around.

You'll spend an arm and a leg to find something comparable. And you'd hate packing it back and forth to the beach. So, I guess my point is: do you want to save the money for some dinners or lunches, or do you want the luxury of just walking down to the water and plopping your booty in a chair without setting up an umbrella and chairs? Only you can answer that. I suggest you pop open a cold one and ponder it for a while. Edited: 10:01 am, January 16, 2011 We rent the set-ups. It is well worth the money, IMO. We're right where we want to be and no one, including my husband!, has to carry anything down. Depends on where you are staying too, some places include the beach set-ups with your rental... If a free beach set-up does not come with your condo, I would use my own umbrella/chairs. I have always thought the rates for a beach rental set-up are outrageous. For the price of two days of rental, you can buy your own stuff. Also, I am very much opposed to the concept of the beach rentals "taking over" a beach.

There is nothing more irritating than seeing those long rows of chairs, most of which have no one sitting in them at any one time, occupying prime beach space. I could go on and on about beach chair rentals and operations. You are touching a sore nerve here with me! I agree with you! I am renting a condo, and I just believe that condo owner's should be supplying that as rental incentive to their propective renters. If only......some condo owners are having a hard time paying the mortgage - taxes - utilities etc without shelling out more money. You realize that the more incentives you have the odds are the larger the rental price. One nice thing to having your own setup as opposed to renting is the chairs don't go away after the beach guys go home. We bought our own umbrella at Walmart, and it works great for us. It's not a really big one, but it folds down small so it's very light to carry. On the other hand, it doesn't really provide any shade when the sun is at an angle.

We don't even use chairs. We're pretty low maintenance at the beach. I second that you must get the corkscrew thing for the umbrella. Our first time out, we just stuck the pole in the sand, and it blew over and popped our toddler in the eye while we were wrestling with it. They are called sand anchors and you can purchsse them at Walmart and probably most beach stores. The beach chair rental company on my beach is a completely separate company and has nothing to do with me. A condo owner would shell out thousands of dollars over the course of a summer if he/she paid for everyone's beach set-up. Those costs would go to the renter somehow! Best time to visit Destin? If you are preparing for a day at the beach, you will need an awesome beach chair. Sure, you could just take along your favorite beach towel and hope the sand isn't so hot that it scorches you through the fabric. And you could worry about constantly washing your towels and dragging two or three along so you can lay on one, dry off with the other, and possibly take along a spare in case of disaster. You could do all of that, or you could invest in a quality beach chair to keep you and your belongings off of the hot sand. A good beach chair allows you to lounge in a reclined position while you read your favorite book, or lays flat so you can work on your summer tan.

Some beach chairs come with amenities such as an attached pillow that flips to the back of the chair when not in use, pockets or slings for your drinks, books, or cell phone, and even small attached coolers for snacks and quick access to drinking water. The right beach chair will fold and be easily portable. Many come with attached straps that make them easy to carry on your shoulder so you can carry your beach bag as well and still have your hands free to wrangle the kids. You might even choose to invest in a beach chair that has a built-in canopy to shade you from the sun and protect your skin. This is great for people who plan to be outside for hours on end or who have fair skin and are especially prone to sunburn. There are multiple benefits to taking a trip to the beach with your brand new beach chair in tow. Besides the obvious excitement of getting away from work and spending time with sand and ocean, your mind and body can tangibly benefit. Whether you are splashing in the water, running along the shore, or simply kicking back in the sunshine to enjoy your favorite book, music, or get a tan, a day on the beach will wear you out.

The great thing about this is that you will sleep like a baby when you get to your bed. You will get your daily allotment of Vitamin D just by hanging out on the beach for ten minutes. Be careful not to spend too much time in the direct sunlight. Bring a form of shade and always use sunscreen! If you're hesitant about jumping into the water, don't be! The iodine in salt water is a great way to boost your immune system. So wade up to your knees or waist and splash around with the kids or your significant other. You will start feeling rejuvenated in no time. This one might seem obvious, but you tend to get more exercise when you're outdoors. Don't spend your entire time sitting around on your beach chair. Get up, splash around in the water, or take a stroll along the sand. You will feel better if you do. Your skin will thank you for your beach trip. The sand exfoliates, while the sun detoxifies, and the salt water has antibacterial properties. If you have trouble breathing, ocean air can do wonders for your lungs.

You naturally breath deeper when you're outside in fresh air. A day at the beach can exercise your lungs and increase the amount of oxygen you get. Finally, time at the beach is great for your mind. You practically have no choice but to relax and enjoy yourself. This can be replenishing and restful for your mind and help your focus when you finally do have to get back to the regular grind. The modern beach chair most closely resembles the butterfly chair which was invented in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1938. It was designed by three architects named Antonia Bonet, Jorge Ferrari Hardoy, and Juan Kurchan. It was originally made from two steel rods that bent to hold a large leather sling, creating a chair that could be folded and carried anywhere. The butterfly chair is a version of the Paragon chair that was invented in the 1870s to create seating for campaigns. It appears that this design was expanded on to eventually create modern day portable camping chairs and beach chairs.
