The Master in Public Health Program emphasizes on the study of the aspects of community and population health. It comprises the major aspects of population health and the strategies for community health promotion and disease prevention.The study of public health implies the identification of disease related factors, the evaluation of community health, the analysis of intervention programs, the importance of health education as a tool for health promotion and the methods for disease prevention.It is expected that the public health graduate will acquired the knowledge and skills for the diagnosis of community health issues and needs.
Also the student will be qualified to conduct public health field studies and applying methods and strategies for disease prevention and control. Also he or she can work on public health policy issues. Total Trimester Credit-Hours: 58 I. Trimester (August- October) II. Trimester (November- February) III. Upon meeting the following requirements the student will receive a Master of Public Health degree:Completion of the 58 credit-hours programOverall grade point average of at least 2.50 Course that introduces the student to the main concepts of statistical analysis for the application into the public health field. Topics included descriptive analysis of qualitative and quantitative variables, principles of probability, significance tests and regression and correlation principles. This course will provide students with “hands on” practice of statistics applied to public health contemporary issues.
Students are required to conduct practical exercises, assignments and quizzes regarding the topics covered on the Statistical Methods I course (MPH 3102). This course introduces the main concepts of the epidemiologic principles for the study of occurrence of diseases. Topics included: the design of epidemiologic studies, descriptive and analytical epidemiology, principles of causality, hypothesis formulation and the scientific method. This course introduces the students to advanced statistical analysis. Topics included two sample inference using t-distributions, analysis of variance, simple and linear multiple regressions. The course require intensive hands on work in practical exercises. This course introduces to the principles and methods in public health practice based epidemiology. Emphasis will be given to topics such as: surveillance methods, clustering, disease reporting, outbreaks, and case definitions. This course will comprise the aspects of health education and health promotion programs for successful strategies for disease prevention.
Topics in this course included: community health programs development, mass media, political actions, intervention programs, profit and non-profit programs, educational programs. This course examines the major aspects of public health including definitions, theory, history and practice in public health. The course covers the following core areas in public health: health services, health disparities, social sciences, environmental health, health promotion and health policy and management. This course studies the social, behavioral and psychological factors related with disease occurrence among diverse populations. The course will enable students to describe the theoretical framework of the diverse social sciences disciplines such as psychology and anthropology and their application to public health. The course also will discuss the bio-psychosocial model as a core for health promotion and disease prevention. This course introduces the student to the environmental factors and their relation with human health.
Topics included: water pollution, air pollution, environmental toxicology, food contamination, occupational safety and health, solid waste issues and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. This course introduces the student to global health. Topics included: the burden and distribution of diseases, the determinants of global health disparities, global health policies and actions, global health interventions. This course presents theory and practice of surveillance in public health. Topics included: types of surveillance programs, analysis and evaluation of surveillance programs for public health. The purpose of this course is to provide the framework and theories of health management administration applied to the health field. The course will provide to the students with an overview with the basic concepts of strategic planning in the context of health care and community based organizations. This course introduces the student to the analysis of the effectiveness of community health programs.
The course will discuss the concepts related with health evaluation and the implementation interventions programs in community settings. Work in groups under supervision for the design and development of a research proposal project. Students will plan a research project applying the basic concepts and techniques of the scientific method. In Phase I, students will develop the written research proposal plan. This course presents the public health issues related with the urban environments. Topics included: urban population growth, housing issues, healthy cities and the built natural and socioeconomics environments and its relation with health and disease. This course examines the health politics and policy in Puerto Rico as well in the United States. Topics included: access to health services, health insurances, state and federal regulations related with health services, the Puerto Rico health system, the role of institutions and government on the development and implementation of public health policy, methods of policy analysis and legal bases of public health.
