This measurement allows you the flexibility to place the locking mechanism where it will not interfere with any existing handles or fixtures pre-mounted to the door. Many of you have expressed frustration after having searched for this type of hardware for months, or in a couple of cases, years—and I understand the frustration. My mother-in-law and I searched for months, and finally handed the task over to Jerry, our contractor…who proceeded to find it in three seconds. First, let me explain that all we ordered from the company I’m about to list was the hardware itself. We had the wooden doors made at the local door shop we used for the rest of the Lodge doors. Second, the hardware is not exactly cheap. However, it is MUCH lower than most anything I was able to find on high-end design websites. And there’s a builder’s discount available to those of you who can get that type of thing. The company makes more overtly western-themed hardware in the shape of horseshoes, arrows, etc., but I found I liked the straightforward, simple style best. Would you like me to stop talking now? Here are some more peeks at the doors in the Lodge: It’s a really sturdy system; you just mount the track on the wall, mount the rollers onto the door, then place them on top of the track. One challenge we had was that the bottoms of the doors were not attached to anything. While this didn’t really affect the stability of the doors, it was a little strange to have them swing when they were opened or closed. So we tried to figure out a solution that didn’t require running a cumbersome track across the walking path of the doorway. Finally, it came to Jerry in a vision: he figured out that he could cut a groove in the bottom of the DOOR, then install a pin/peg in the FLOOR. That way, the groove rests on the peg, slides back and forth when the door opens and closes, and you don’t even know it’s there. Jerry should win a Home Improvement Oscar for that one. We also put barn doors on the pantry near the kitchen. They still need to be stained. You can see the dishwashing sink and freezers inside.
The pantry’s still unfinished; there’s a big wire hanging from the wall and the freezers aren’t installed yet. When you live in the country, big commercial freezers are vital to survival.
